NCAA still must
OK playing status for
Correia and Flint

The playing status of Joe Correia and Jared Flint has been clarified somewhat by the Western Athletic Conference.

Both were granted medical hardships by the league during the off-season, but have yet to hear from the NCAA for final approval.

Correia is petitioning for a sixth season. The University of Hawaii defensive end doesn't have a redshirt year available to him, but UH officials believe he has a strong enough case to allow him to play this fall.

The former St. Louis School quarterback injured his foot last year. He started the first two games of the 2000 campaign, but wound up sitting from that point because he couldn't play through the pain.

"I'm hopeful they're going to clear me," Correia said after yesterday's practice. "But I won't be able to relax until the NCAA approves it officially."

Flint's status is a little clearer. Like Correia, he was injured in last year's fall camp. He had shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

UH head coach June Jones told the junior college transfer that he had two years of eligibility left, but that's not quite accurate.

If he is not injured in the first three games this fall, then Flint's eligibility clock runs out at the end of the season. Should he play in any of the first three games and gets hurt, then the medical hardship year kicks in for 2002.

Flint said this morning that his shoulder felt good enough for him to maybe cut loose the final two weeks of spring. He felt a little fatigue after yesterday's practice, but he is throwing pain-free.

"If I thought this was my last year, I might try to push it more," Flint said. "But I don't want to do anything to hurt my chances."

UH officials are also trying to get an extra year for running backs Avion Weaver and Afatia Thompson. But at this point, both are considered long shots.

Scrimmages set

Hawaii associate head coach George Lumpkin confirmed yesterday that the Warriors will hold two scrimmages prior to the spring game on Sunday, March 25.

The first one will be next Saturday at Cooke Field. The second scrimmage will be the following Saturday, March 17. Both practice times are scheduled for 7 a.m.

"We're going to go hard in those scrimmages," Lumpkin said. "But we'll still be as careful as we can be to make sure nobody gets hurt."

UH has limited contact in the past because of lack of depth. But with nearly 100 players taking part this spring, depth might not be as big a problem.

"We've got numbers at most spots," Lumpkin said. "Scrimmages are a good indication of where we're at. Our first day of full pads will be Monday. We'll try to keep the guys up as much as we can."

After this morning's practice, Hawaii will take tomorrow off, then return for workouts on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Outland Trophy push

Hawaii offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh said he will make a push for offensive lineman Vince Manuwai to be considered for the Outland Trophy this fall.

The sports information office will also promote Manuwai, wideout Ashley Lelie and quarterback Tim Chang for All-America consideration.

"It's nice to be considered for something like the Outland Trophy," Manuwai said after yesterday's practice. "But I'm just going to go out and play my game, and let that other stuff just take care of itself."

Last year, Chang threw for 3,041 yards and 19 touchdowns. Lelie caught 74 passes for 1,110 yards and 11 scores.
