Komine rises to 3-1
for Cornhuskers

University of Nebraska pitcher Shane Komine improved to 3-1 this season in a 3-2 victory over Texas Tech yesterday.

Komine, the former Kalani High standout, went the distance against the Red Raiders, scattering 10 hits and striking out 10.

He was named the Big 12 Player of the Year last year, helping the Cornhuskers into the College World Series.

Sea Warriors split

Kelton Otsuka pitched a six-hitter in a 5-1 win for Hawaii Pacific over Cal State Dominguez yesterday and the Sea Warriors split a baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park.

Otsuka (2-0) struck out three and walked four in a seven-inning game and Wade Taguchi homered to start a four-run fourth-inning rally for Hawaii Pacific (7-9).

The Toros (7-7) won the second game, 8-6.

Taguchi and Bryce Uegawachi each rapped four hits on the day for the Sea Warriors.

State cheer tomorrow

Fourteen of the top high school varsity cheerleading squads will compete for the unofficial state championship title tomorrow in the University of Hawaii Cheerleaders 2001 Spirit Challenge at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The event starts at 4:15 p.m. with the intermediate school division. The junior varsity competition is at 4:45 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.

Next year, cheerleading will be sanctioned by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

Golf Hawaii show

An interview with PGA Senior Tour professional Tom Kite headlines tomorrow's edition of Golf Hawaii on The Golf Channel.

The program on Oceanic Cable 25, hosted by Mark Rolfing, will be shown at 1:30 p.m. The program will be rebroadcast at 1 p.m. Tuesday, 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Saturday.

Smith at QB Club

Pete Smith, coach of the newly crowned state boys' basketball championship team from Kalaheo High, is among the four speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel.

Also scheduled to speak are: HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya, Hawaii Pacific softball coach Howard Okita and UH assistant football coach Dan Morrison.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the noon program.

Ex-Rainbow to coach

Former UH football player Brian Norwood has joined the Penn State staff as an assistant coach.

Norwood, a Radford High graduate, played for the Rainbows from 1984 to '87 as a cornerback and free safety. He was named the team's most improved defensive back his senior season.

Following a season with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League in 1989, Norwood began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arizona. He also has been a coach at Richmond, the Naval Academy and Texas Tech.

All-WAC academic teams

Nineteen athletes from Hawaii were among the 172 named yesterday to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the fall semester.

Nine Wahine soccer team members were honored, attaining at least a 3.2 grade-point average: Camille Kalama, Megan Lytle, Wanette Miyashiro, Amanda Orand, Demarre Sanchez, Erin Schremser, Noelle Takemoto, Leila Wai and Lea Wakabayashi.

Four football players were honored: David Gilmore, Michael Iosua, Robert Morgan and Hyrum Peters. Four volleyball players were named: Jennifer Carey, Veronica Lima, Andrea Gomez-Tukuafu and Lily Kahumoku.

Selected from cross country were: Diane Koha and Casey McGuire-Turcotte.
