Awards party hits the spot

HONOLULU MAGAZINE'S hale Aina Awards, with plenty of food from top isle restaurants and good wine from distributors, is always a smashing success. This year's event was held Sunday at Mug shotNeiman Marcus and attracted 570 people who packed the Mariposa restaurant and part of the third floor. Mariposa chef Doug Lum, manager Elise Faur and their employees deserve praise, as do all those taking part. Music was by Don Tiki with vocalist Teresa Bright. After opening remarks by Honolulu publisher John Alves, Tom Mullen said American Express will add $10,000 to the amount raised by the event, which benefits the Hale Aina Ohana. The ohana backs community college culinary schools. Magazine editor John Heckathorn handed out awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award to Martin and Jeanie Wyss, who have sold Swiss Inn and are retiring ... Philippe Padovani is taking over the management of Baci at Restaurant Row ... Let's hope Chai Chaowasaree solves his INS problems so he can stay here and run his two eateries ...

heart ball sets record

THE Heart Ball last Saturday at the Hilton grossed a record $630,000. "It's wonderful," said Vivien Sted, who chaired the ball. "All the people helping out did a wonderful job, otherwise we would not have seen these figures" ... "Allan's bid won the BMW," said a wide-eyed Gina Schultz at the ball. Gina's date, attorney Allan Gifford, bid $42,000 for the $50,000 convertible. Look for them to be riding pretty ... Many praised the food at the ball, and that must have made Hilton execs Peter Schall, Noel Trainor and Guido Ullman feel delicious ... Dan Cooke was emcee, Cathy Foy-Mahi handled entertainment and one of the town's best bands, Nueva Vida, played dance music ...

MOVING ON: Duc's Bistro continues to offer a big little Hawaiian music show Thursday nights with singer-guitarist Mihana Souza at the helm. Owana Salazar walked in Thursday with daughter, Mahana Walters, a former Miss Hawaii Teen USA. Owana wowed the crowd with vocals, slack-key guitar work and duets with Mihana. They were backed by singer-musicians Van Diamond and Bobby Young. Another high was vocals by Penny Silva Wells. Arlene Ahmoo and Kina Shaw danced hula. Kelly Sharp marked her birthday at Duc's Thursday. "It was her 29th," said Bankoh's smiling Tom Zimmerman ...

MARIANN Tesauro is home for a visit and takes a daily mile swim in front of the Outrigger Canoe Club as she had been doing for 30 years before moving to Italy. On her final lap to the windsock, 220 yards out, a tired Mariann heard screams and spotted a young woman flailing in the waves. After calming the woman from Japan, who had been pulled by the current from the Kaimana Beach area, Mariann assisted her in swimming slowly to shore ...

Wood Craft continues

I'M happy to say my Saturday column will continue without disruption in the new Star-Bulletin March 17. The last Wood Craft in the old Bulletin will be next Saturday ... A double portion of Italian opera -- "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Pagliacci" -- is scheduled tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Concert Hall ... A warm touch was added to Grandy Perry's services last Saturday at Hawaiian memorial Park. A pamphlet containing two favorite recipes from the Willows -- homemade curry sauce and mile high coconut cream pie -- was distributed. Grandy's family formerly owned the restaurant ...
