Star-BulletinThe $498 million is the highest capital improvements proposal in Harris' six years as mayor.
The $201 million in sewage projects is the most ever devoted to disposal of waste water. More than $100 million goes to expanding the city's Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Other big-ticket, sewage-related projects include $21 million for modification of the Ala Moana Wastewater Pump Station, $15 million for sewer reconstruction along Kailua's Kalaheo Avenue and $14 million for the Hart Street pump station project in Kalihi.
In other areas, the mayor has proposed:
$20 million for new public safety facilities, including $5 million for the long-awaited East Honolulu police substation to be built near the Hawaii Kai park-and-ride facility.And $10 million will go to the new Fire Department headquarters.
$24 million for transportation and transit facilities, including $6 million for the purchase of buses and $9 million for acquisition of land, design and construction of the Middle Street transit center.
$5 million for the first phase of a $15 million Waianae Coast alternate emergency route.
$6 million for redevelopment of the area surrounding the Hawaii Convention Center.
$12 million for the purchase of equipment.
$3 million for renovations to the Kulana Nani apartment complex in Kailua.
$8 million for upgrading and expanding the city's telecommunications system for police and other personnel.
$2.8 million to design, construct and purchase street lights to replace rusting ones at the city's West Loch Estates and West Loch Fairways.
$800,000 for a second fire/rescue helicopter.
