Tickets for the University of Hawaii's season opener with Montana went on sale yesterday at the Hula Bowl office on Maui.

The first tier of seats were set aside for the regular UH season-ticket holders, who had until the end of February to exercise their option of buying tickets for the game at Maui's War Memorial Stadium.

For the next two weeks, the 9,000 season-ticket holders for the Hula Bowl have a chance to buy tickets for the first UH regular-season game played on a neighbor island.

The third tier of seats will be available March 14-21 for those who already signed up with a major credit card.

Football fans who aren't season-ticket holders for UH or the Hula Bowl, and haven't already signed up can do so now at the Hula Bowl office to buy any remaining tickets that go on sale after March 21.

"If we have any tickets left, we'll put them on sale on a first-come, first-served basis," Hula Bowl chief executive officer Lenny Klompus said yesterday. "I'm not sure how many tickets were bought by the regular season-ticket holders, but I would say it's more than 2,000."

With the corporate village, Maui's War Memorial Stadium can seat about 20,000. Tickets are $28.50 for sideline seats and $23.50 for the end zone.

Klompus said there would be no orders taken over the telephone. The Hula Bowl office is located at the Maui Mall where a UH day will run from noon to 3 p.m. this Saturday.

"We're flying the UH cheerleaders over here to help kick things off," Klompus said. "Mayor James Apana will be there to give a speech, so we're very excited about it. We're confident the game will be sold out. We had somebody come in here today and buy 26 tickets. They were standing outside our office door when we got here at 7 a.m."

The game is set for 6 p.m.
