UH coach Jones’
vital signs stable

University of Hawaii football coach June Jones remained in guarded condition yesterday, according to his physician, Dr. Neil Fergusson.

Jones' vital signs remained stable and he continued to show improvement.

Jones is recovering from multiple injuries suffered in an auto accident Feb. 22.

Lee earns WAC honors

Crystal Lee was named Western Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the week yesterday, the second time this month she has received that honor.

The 5-foot-11 senior forward scored 60 points as the Wahine split two road games.

Lee, from Spokane, Wash., averaged 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the two games. She was 16-for-31 (.516) from the field and 7-for-15 (.467) from 3-point range, and she converted 21 of 22 (.955) free throw attempts.

She ranks second in the WAC in 3-point percentage (.427), fifth in free throw percentage (.808), tied for sixth in scoring (16.4 points a game) and seventh in field-goal percentage (.458).

BYU-Hawaii takes two

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Montana State-Billings yesterday, 5-2 and 6-0.

The Seasiders (3-7) got a big hit from Holly Harn -- a two-run single --in the first game, while Lyndi Frei pitched a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts.

Summer George went the distance on the mound in the shutout victory in the second game. She got offensive help from Lyza Halas, who drove in a pair of runs, and Alisha Durette, who hit three singles, stole three bases and scored twice.

BYU-Hawaii snapped a six-game losing streak.

Montana State-Billings dropped to 0-4.

Hawaii surfers advance

A slew of Hawaii surfers advanced through the third round in the HIC Pipeline Pro yesterday in clean 8- to 12-foot waves at the Banzai Pipeline at Ehukai Beach.

The contest is an Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series event.

Many Hawaii surfers won their third-round heats yesterday, including Mark Healy, David Cantrell, Kawai Lindo, Rocky Cannon, David Gonsalves, David Wassell, Jamie O'Brien, Jeremy Doudt, Chava Greenlee, Danny Fuller, Tory Barron and Aaron Fredette.

The fourth round, featuring the 32 surfers who survived the third round and the 32 seeded surfers, is today, conditions permitting.

According to contest officials, Hawaii's Kamalei Alexander scored one of the highest rides of the day, dropping in late on a monster wave and getting covered up.

Fujii is Player of Week

Hawaii Pacific's Kristin Fujii was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week yesterday after leading the Sea Warriors to four wins last weekend.

Fujii, a sophomore left fielder, went 5-for-11 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs in the four games.

Wahine attendance high

Playing its matches at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium was a plus for the University of Hawaii Wahine this past fall.

Hawaii ranked ninth nationally in home average attendance and home total attendance.

The Wahine drew 12,892 fans, an average of 1,074 per match.

North Carolina led the nation with 28,331 fans, an average of 3,148 per match.

Wahine volleyball camp

The 20th annual University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Camp will have four camps for boys and girls entering grades 4 through 12.

The camps are June 18-21, July 19-22, July 30-31, Aug. 1-2 and Aug. 4-7, from 1 to 5 p.m. daily.

The cost is $130 per camper. Those interested in attending Camp No. 4 will be offered dormitory and meal service for a registration fee of $375.

Skateboarding demo

The Split skateboarding demo tour, featuring Andy Macdonald, Danny Gonzalez, Fabrizio Santos, Dan Pageau, Neal Hendrix, Jake Nunn and Jim Gagne, will visit Hawaii next week.

There is a 9 p.m. kick-off party open to the public at Fisherman's Wharf on March 1.

The next day, the team will sign autographs at Local Motion (Waikiki Central Store) from 5 to 7 p.m.

A skateboarding demonstration will be held March 3 at the skatepark on Hickam Air Force Base.

All spectators must have access to the base through employment, skatepark membership or special invitation from Split. Skatepark members may bring up to six guests.

The tour concludes with a demonstration March 4 at Keopuolani Park in Wailuku, Maui, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Rainbow dance auditions

The University of Hawaii Band Rainbow Dance Squad will hold 2001-2002 auditions April 8 at 9 a.m. in the athletic department's studio 3.
