Makeup for
Fall 2001: Dramatic
eyes, pale lips

Eyes were the focus for Fall 2001 Fashion Week in New York, which took place over 10 days ending last week.

Dark and smoky was the look at Richard Tyler, Angel Sanchez and Rebecca Taylor. Catherine Malandrino and Douglas Hannant exaggerated eye shapes. Badgley Mischka and Oscar de la Renta laid the liquid liner on thick in black. It's all about the eyes.

"Dark eyes rule," said Gordon Espinet, chief makeup artist at M.A.C Cosmetics. "They look good on everyone and let you reveal your mysterious side. Eyes now are harder edged and less smudgy.

"Graphic, exaggerated, cat and winged shapes prevail, topped off with heavy-duty mascara and curled."

Don't try the look for sunny spring, lest you scare the mama-sans at the mall.

Other trends for fall: Skin is matte again. Lips are natural -- think taupy and fleshy.
