Black, white and read
all over and over again

Mike Morton of Honolulu asks why the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin carries a triangular recycling symbol. "Does that mean the paper is recyclable? Or recycled? Symbolically yrs."

Asking newspaper people why something has appeared on the front page for years without being questioned and you'll get blank looks worthy of a Clinton pardon-wrangler.

"Uh, because," was a favorite answer. Well, that might be all the answer your parents needed when you were 10 years old, but we're looking for a response with a little more meat on it.

Bill Bogert, production head of the Hawaii Newspaper Agency, finally provided some logic. The symbol is there, says he, because the press uses recycled paper and recycles its ink. The paper, purchased in Washington state, partially comprises recycled fiber. The ink used at the Honolulu Newspaper Agency is scraped out of the tubs and re-packed in a special "ink room," according to Bogert. The process not only saves money, it keeps the toxic ink out of landfills.

The yellow pages show only one recycling outfit that accepts newsprint. Maybe with all the newspapers that are going to be printed here soon, it'll be economically feasible to recycle paper locally.
