Shake it up for a Fat Tuesday
block party in Nuuanu

Star-Bulletin

Practice while you can. Start loosening your waist and waggling those hips. It's Mardi Gras time and that means it's time for everyone to don feathers and their skimpiest costumes and merengue and samba over to Nuuanu Avenue tomorrow where a new block party will celebrate Fat Tuesday.

The free event will take place 6 to 11 p.m. on Nuuanu from Pauahi to King streets, and Hotel Street.

In New Orleans style, there'll be six full bars on the sidewalks. Stages will be set up for dance and DJs, plus zydeco, blues, jazz and rock music performed by the Northsiders, and the funk, disco, Latin and R&B of Dis "Funk" tional.

A walking and mini float parade will begin at 7:15 p.m. at Nuuanu Avenue and Pauahi St.

You'll work up an appetite slithering, shaking and leaping around so Cajun food booths will be set up by 3660 on the Rise/Kakaako Kitchen, Tropic's Diner, Indigo and Havana Cabana.

There will be a costume contest for the best Mardi Gras costumes, and Hawaii's Cajun King, Cajun Queen and Miss Jack Daniels Mardi Gras Hawaii 2001 will be introduced.

If you don't have a costume stop by anyway; there'll be beads and masks for sale.

The event is a fund-raiser for Victoria Foundation, Inc., for the benefit of local charities. For more information, call 545-4195.

Over at Aloha Tower, a parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow with a party to follow at Gordon Biersch. The party, complete with an erotic art display sponsored by Kim Taylor Reece, is expected to continue to 2 a.m. Admission is free, but it's only for 21 and older.

In Waikiki, head down to Nick's Fishmarket, where a Mardi Gras costume party continues until 1:30 a.m.

The event starts at 8 p.m. tomorrow with costume contest, door prizes, DJ and complimentary Cajun pupu buffet. Nick's is at 2070 Kalakaua Ave. For more information, call 955-6333.

GET UP TO SPEED

If you're afraid of making A at Mardi Gras, practice your merengue moves on the dance floor at Rolando's Salsa Club at Kahala Mall.

DJ MasterMixer will be whipping up a salsa-merengue-Latin mix beginning 9 p.m. tonight. Cover is $3. Call 732-2861 for more information.
