Three titles for UH

SAN ANTONIO -- University of Hawaii swimmer Renate DuPlessis successfully defended her 100-yard butterfly title, teammates Sara Watchorn won the 200 freestyle and Sarah Farr the 3-meter diving crown in the Western Athletic Conference Women's Championships yesterday.

DuPlessis' time of 54.30 seconds in the 100 fly qualified her for the NCAA Championships. Watchorn's winning 200 free clocking was 1 minute, 48.08 seconds. Farr had a winning score of 503.05.

The three sophomores helped UH hold second place behind runaway leader SMU going into today's concluding competition.

Lobos win Burns golf title

New Mexico's Michael Letzig captured individual honors and led the Lobos to the team championship in the John Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament yesterday at the Leilehua course.

Letzig shot a final-round 69 for a 54-hole total of 199. New Mexico ended with an 832, five shots better than runner-up Auburn.

UH tied for 12th place at 871. Sophomore Scott Carlyle paced UH with a 69-210, good for a share of 11th place in individual play.

Softball sweep for UH-Hilo

Taysha Anderson pitched the University of Hawaii-Hilo to a 3-2 softball victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii, completing a sweep of yesterday's doubleheader on the Big Island.

The Vulcans took the opener, 3-1, with Anderson earning a save in relief of winner Kristine Kahoaloii.

Bartels fourth in Roxy

Hawaii's Melanie Bartels placed fourth in the Quiksilver Roxy Pro, a World Qualifying Series surfing event at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast of Australia yesterday.

Bartels posted the highest wave of the day -- a six-point ride --and placed behind event winner Melanie Redman, runner-up and current world champion Layne Beachley and third-place Heather Clark.

Cougars stymie Wahine

Washington State shut out the University of Hawaii, 7-0, in a women's tennis match at Lewiston, Idaho, Thursday.

Wallace at QB club

UH basketball coach Riley Wallace heads the speakers' lineup for Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel.

Also scheduled to speak are Bob Fishman of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, UH assistant football coach Mike Cavanaugh and Pearl City High School soccer coach Scott Keopuhiwa.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. followed by the program at noon.

Twisters take medals

Gymnasts Quincy Solano and Geary Udagawa of the Hawaiian Island Twisters placed first and second, respectively, in the vault event of the recent Black Jack Nationals at Las Vegas.

The rookie Class 4 team of Austin Fowler, Geremy Campos, Joshua Lee and Mark Yee, were third in the team vault event.

At the Class 3 level, Udagawa placed third in floor exercise for his age group.

Solano was second in the rings, third in the parallel bars and fourth on the pommel horse and in the all-around in his age group.

At the Class 4 level, Lee was third in the vault and floor exercise, while Fowler was fourth in the parallel bars.
