Kathleen Ann "Kay" Ballard, 77, of Honokaa, Hawaii, a retired nurse's aide, died Monday in North Hawaii Community Hospital. She was also a Headstart preschool teacher. She was born in Troy, N.Y. She is survived by daughters Joan Katz-Earl, Nina Winslow and Jackie Moore, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Private services.

James A. Ekern, 84, of Kailua-Kona, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, died Tuesday at home. He was also a retired salmon cannery superintendent. He was born in Bainsbridge Island, Wash. He is survived by wife Ursula, son Peter J., daughters Karen Chipman and Therese Williams and seven grandchildren. No services.

Anacleto C. Gorospe, 74, of Honolulu, a retired farmer, died Feb. 13 in Queen's Medical Center. He was born in Lihue. He is survived by sons Ricardo and Christopher; daughters Erlinda Viloria, Victoria Gorospe, Aurelia Garcia, Estrellita Magbual and Geraldine Rasalan; and 11 grandchildren. Melquiades T. Tabula, 87, of Honolulu, a retired maintenance man with Kukui Gardens, died Saturday in Queen's Medical Center. He was born in Pangasinan, the Philippines.
