Getting there could be chicken soup

If you have an original, uplifting true story tucked away in your desk or you can put together a non-fiction essay or poem this weekend it could earn you a trip to the Maui Writers Conference.

The folks at "Chicken Soup for the Soul" are sponsoring a writing contest and the winning story will net its author a trip to the conference. The story will also be considered for publication in one of the upcoming "Chicken Soup" books.

Submissions must be true stories no longer than 1,200 words and be the original work of the author submitting the entry. Ideal stories will have vivid characters that evoke sympathy and emotion from the reader. Stories may be previously published.

Judging will be equally weighted on the basis of tone, content composition and creativity.

The deadline for submissions is March 1. Entries are being accepted by fax or email and they must include an entry form and releases. To download the rules, releases and entry form via the Internet, go to www.chickensoup.com. Or request the information via fax at (805)-563-2945.

The winning story earns the author a paid entrance to the 2001 Maui Writers Conference, round-trip airfare from the closest airport to their home to Kahului, Maui, four nights of accommodations at the Outrigger Wailea (single occupancy), and shuttle transportation between the airport and hotel. The approximate value is up to $3,000.
