Aiea wins
paddling prize

Aiea became the third team in as many years to capture the Tesoro Hawaii Cup at Keehi Lagoon on Saturday.

The Cup is awarded to the high school with the most outstanding combined boys, girls and mixed crew performances at the Oahu Interscholastic Association Outrigger Canoe Championships.

The Castle boys' and girls' crews won Tesoro Hawaii Awards and OIA varsity championships. Aiea was the mixed champion. Students from 20 OIA schools participated.

McKinley won the first Tesoro Cup in 1999 and Kaimuki won last year.

Two named Gatorade State Players of the Year

Natasha Kai of Kahuku and Travis Watanabe of Iolani are the Gatorade State Soccer Players of the Year. Kai and Watanabe are now eligible for the Gatorade National High School Soccer Player of the Year Award. Kai helped the Red Raiders to their best season ever, which included a trip to the state tournament. Watanabe turned in another outstanding season in arguably the toughest league in the state, and helped the Raiders reach the state semifinals.

State swimming championships this weekend

The Baldwin boys and Punahou girls hit the water Friday and Saturday to defend their state swimming and diving titles.

Action at the Duke Kahanamoku Pool at the University of Hawaii begins at 7 a.m. on both days. Diving preliminaries are at 9 a.m. on Friday and swimming trials follow at 3:30 p.m. Diving semifinals and finals are Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Swimming finals are at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m. wraps up the championships.

Swimmers are limited to two individual events and two team relays or one individual and three relays. The top eight qualifiers from the trials advance to the final.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students (K-12). Parking at UH is $3. The gates to the pool open a half-hour before the first event of each day.

The Hawaii Sports Network will broadcast a one-hour program of the championships on K-5 The Home Team on March 11 at 2 p.m. and March 18 at 1 p.m.

Joey DeSa starts tomorrow

The 14th Annual Joey DeSa Memorial Baseball Tournament starts tomorrow and runs through Saturday. Four games are scheduled each day, with the championship game slated for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Joey DeSa Field. Participating teams include two-time defending state champ Molokai, Damien, Kailua, St. Louis, Waianae, Mid-Pacific, Roosevelt and Kamehameha.
