HOUSTON -- Even without captain Kylie Galloway, the University of Hawaii women's basketball team still had a chance to win yesterday.

It wasn't to be.

The Rice Owls finished the game with a 16-7 run to edge Hawaii, 57-53, in a Western Athletic Conference contest.

The loss was the first in six road games for UH this season and halted the Wahine win streak at seven consecutive games.

The Wahine have yet to win at Autry Court in three attempts.

Galloway suffered cuts on the bridge of her nose and left index finger when she bumped into a picture on the wall of her hotel room getting out of bed at 1:30 a.m. yesterday.

Not wanting to wake her roommate Karena Greeny, Galloway didn't turn on a light.

The cut on her nose required 10 stitches.

"Kylie is so fortunate. A quarter inch either way and it would have caught an eyeball," UH assistant coach Serenda Valdez said. "The picture was huge. We all had one in our room."

Hawaii head coach Vince Goo said on the pregame show that Galloway's absence would not be an excuse if UH lost.

But, take away 15 points, five rebounds and a top defender and that does make a difference.

Despite a makeshift lineup, the Wahine led at halftime, 35-21, but shot just 20 percent from the field in the second half.

From the 10:40 mark of the second half to 5.8 seconds remaining, Hawaii did not go to the foul line.

The Wahine didn't score a basket in the final 3:43.

"In the end, we went right to the basket and got blocked under the basket. We got rebounds and got blocked again. It was very physical," Goo said.

"We did what we needed to do to go to the free throw line, but didn't get the fouls."

April Atuaia paced Hawaii with 13 points and hit 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Crystal Lee added 11 points and Dainora Puida pulled down 12 rebounds.

The 53 points was a season low for Hawaii.

The Wahine return home today, have tomorrow off, then go back to practice Wednesday.

On the next road trip, they play San Jose State and Texas Christian, the teams that defeated UH in the Stan Sheriff Center earlier this season.
