FOR LPGA Hall of Famer Betsy King, there's no place like Hawaii.

King defends her Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open title starting tomorrow as the LPGA Tour moves from the Big Island to the Kapolei Golf Course.

She tied the tournament record with a 12-under 204 last year, ending a winless streak that lasted two years and 10 months.

It was King's fourth LPGA victory in Hawaii.

The very first of her 33 career victories occurred in Hawaii when she won the 1984 Women's Kemper Open at Kaanapali, Maui. King won the tournament two more times in 1988 and 1989, when the event was held at Princeville, Kauai.

Bullet What: 54-holes, tomorrow through Saturday.
Bullet Site: Kapolei Golf Course.
Bullet Purse: $750,000 ($112,500 first place).
Bullet Tickets: $10 daily, $15 season (for all three days).
Bullet Television: The Golf Channel (O25), noon to 2:30 p.m.

She missed the cut at last week's Takefuji Classic at the Kona Country Club, but remains confident about her chances this week.

Winning is a great confidence builder, according to King.

"Once you win, that changes your thinking," said the LPGA career money leader who is closing in on $7 million. "I thought I'd have to play perfectly to win. Now I know you can make mistakes and still do it."

An obvious winner on the golf course, King continues her winning ways off it as well. She has worked on three Habitat for Humanity house-building projects in Phoenix and in Charlotte, N.C. King also organized a group of LPGA Tour players to carry much-needed supplies to orphans in war-torn Romania.

Now King has embarked on a Drive for Life (a World Vision project) as her fund-raising focus for 2001.

She and a number of her LPGA peers will raise money for needy residents in Tanzania. They will go there in the fall.

To that end, King has pledged $120 for every birdie she makes this year. Eagles will be worth even more.

"This is an opportunity for us to capitalize on our skills to the benefit of others," King said. "We can and will make a difference."

Joining King in the 144-player field will be fellow Hall of Famer Patty Sheehan, who's making her 2001 debut, as well as last week's winner Lorie Kane and the other two 2001 champions, Sophie Gustafson and Grace Park.

Two-time LPGA player of the year Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam are expected to wage another duel, as well.

Besides King, five past Hawaiian Ladies Open champions will tee it up -- Sorenstam (1997), Sheehan (1991), Wendy Ward (1998), Cindy Flom (1987) and Sherri Turner (1989).

Twelve players from the Japan LPGA will also compete for the $750,000 purse, with the winner getting $112,500. The 54-hole tournament ends Saturday.
