Memories and chocolate

WELL, here it is Valentine's Day and for those lucky enough to have a Valentine of their very own, enjoy. For those who have absentmindedly forgotten to get that special someone a sweet remembrance Mug shotof the occasion, you might want to get yourself post haste to Liberty House Ala Moana where pastry chef Mark Okumura of Hawaii Regional Cuisine Marketplace is selling "Love Shacks," complete with sugary amenities such as gumdrop decor, candied doors and frosted trim. Yes, and gingerbread walls anchored with chocolate. Each of these "shacks" is fully furnished with three chocolate truffles inside, a little piece of real estate that's a steal for $25 ... Some people are taking Valentine's Day more seriously. That would include Jerome Andrade of Borthwick Mortuary, who's having a candlelight memorial at the Borthwick Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. with music by Puamana. Some of us remember Andrade from when he was the manager/host of La Ronde atop the Ala Moana Building. You could say he's gone into a downward spiral except La Ronde is long closed and Borthwick's is thriving ... Scott Fernandez got a nice birthday present when he learned that the Boys & Girls Club has already topped the $20,000 mark in monies donated to the memory of his dad, the always cheerful showman Kane Fernandez, who died last month. Checks are still coming in and will eventually become a perpetual scholarship program for needy youth in Kane's name ...

Dream Catcher

AN Oregon organization called "Dream Catchers," similar to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, brought to Hawaii a girl battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, and people here sprang into action to make the stay of 18-year-old Koryn Keck one others can only dream about. Ted McAneely, G.M. of the Hawaii Prince Hotel, helped with rooms for the Keck family. Patti Nakagawa of DFS Galleria sent Koryn a welcoming gift, a native American dream catcher with a Hawaiian flair. Shari Chang of Aloha helped fly the Kecks to Lihue in time to take in the NFL quarterback challenge and Koryn got photographed with many of the league's top quarterbacks. And before heading back to Portland, she was given the game shoes of Peyton Manning, who autographed them for her. Thanks to many, Koryn will always remember the dreams she caught in Hawaii ...

JUST back from Rotterdam is Hawaii International Film Festival G.M. Chuck Boller. So what did he do while visiting the capital city of Holland? Go to the movies. He saw a total of 31 films, and had little time for anything else ... Ed Wary owns four restaurants, Auntie Pasto and Dixie Grill, two locations each, but when baby Madeline Rose celebrated her first birthday, he was banished from the kitchen by his octogenarian mother, Nana, who flew in from Massachusetts to oversee the Italian menu items. Sounds like the acorn didn't fall far from the tree ...

Jimmy & Jason

AT a wine tasting benefit for Sisters Offering Support on Sunday, sponsors have called on Jimmy Borges and his Jazz All-Stars to perform from 3 to 6 p.m. at the JMD Educational Center in Halawa Valley ... And while "Baywatch Hawaii" was canceled, Jason Momoa will still be on hand at Liberty House Ala Moana Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. to sign autographs and pose for pictures ... I'm off on vacation and will return to the column on March 7 ...
