Hawaii visitors
bring snow

WHILE we spoiled folks in Hawaii complain when the temperature dips into the 60s at night, the weather is pretty horrendous on the mainland with rain and snow everywhere. Still, expatriate Mug shotHawaiians Mary Anne and David Stubenberg were complaining at the lack of much needed snow for skiing at Tahoe when a huge snowstorm arrived along with old pals Wendy and Steve Goodenow plus Sandi and Jeff Portnoy, the latter there to provide commentary for the UH basketball team in its game against Reno. Despite the fact that all attended the game and yelled for UH, the Warriors lost. Steve gave the Goodenows instructions on where to buy snow chains and how to put them on their rental car for the drive to Fresno to watch the team there. The bus carrying the team got into Fresno late, and the Goodenows opted to stay on with the Portnoys and their hosts to watch the game on TV. They finally got their chains on and made it down the mountain road the next day, following yet another UH loss. Portnoy also had to stay over, what with airports jammed up all over the West Coast. Meanwhile, the Goodenows have still more Hawaii guests coming in and Mary Anne is thinking of changing her answering tape to, "Welcome to the Grand Motel." ...

Isn't that someone?

STILL more "Who's that?" sightings at Zanzabar recently. 98 Degrees raised the temperature in the place following its Pro Bowl lip-syncing. Also in was Eddie Griffin, who you may have seen in "Double Take" or "Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo." Comic Tommy Davidson of "In Living Color" was also at the club, and the multitalented and visible Tyrese Gibson, alternately a Guess model, MTV DJ and Grammy-nominated and American Music Award-winning singer. She also has a new film by director John Singleton coming out, called "Baby Boy." Singleton has a multitude of credentials, such as director/producer of "Shaft," "Boyz N the Hood," "Poetic Justice," "Higher Learning," "Rosewood" and Michael Jackson's video, "Remember the Time." ...

THE things you hear on TV: On many newscasts and sportscasts, someone or something being "arguably" better than something or someone else. The most overused word in broadcasting ... Those "If you don't think about it, it sounds like a plus" TV spots promising a "certified pre-owned vehicle." They're not going to stick the kid with a new car and get away with calling it "pre-owned." These are "certified." ... A letter to the editor used the word "liberal" without the writer sticking "bleeding heart" in front of it. A first? ... And I have to wonder if our new national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice, has been hanging around George W. too long. Regarding the submarine hitting the fishing boat in Hawaiian waters, she took to TV yesterday to promise a "transparent investigation." Say what? ...

Condommania

WHEN better than Valentine's Day to stage Condom Fair 2001? That's what's happening at the UH Campus Center tomorrow at 10 a.m. Some 5,000 are expected to attend and while promoters say they're not promoting sexual activity (as if they have to do that at UH!) they're pointing out the value of condoms in preventing unwanted side effects -- disease and pregnancy. There'll be such activities as a Condom Toss, Condom Guess, Condom-Rose Making, 101 Ways to Make Love Without Doin' It graffiti board and the ever popular Condom Relay ...
