Nevada beats Hilo

Bo Bryant went 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI to lead Nevada past Hawaii-Hilo, 7-5, in a WAC game.

Hilo took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but the Wolf Pack scored four runs in the fourth and never trailed again.

Starting pitcher Jason Mackintosh earned the win for Nevada, despite giving up four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Robert Shimabuku, who pitched 3 2/3 innings, was tagged with the loss for UHH.

The teams play again today and tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Hayashi takes lead
in Pearl Open

Defending champion Kevin Hayashi carded a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead going into today's second round of the Hawaii Pearl Open golf tournament at the Pearl Country Club.

Hidemasa Hoshino was at 66 while Takashi Hasegawa and Beau Yokomoto were tied for third with 67s.

Play continues through tomorrow's final round.

Charity football game

The Na Kane Koa semipro football team will take on the USA All-Stars tonight in the Charity Bowl at Kailua High School field.

Kickoff time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 with proceeds going to various Hawaii charities.

Quarterback Club meets

University of Hawaii women's basketball coach Vince Goo and Walter Guild, paddling coach at the Outrigger Canoe Club, are among the featured speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Also speaking will be Robert Becker, chairman of the Hawaii Division of the U.S. Fencing Association, and Peter Toshkov, four-time Bulgarian national fencing champion. The two also will provide a demonstration of epee.

January's sportspersons of the month will also be recognized: UH men's basketball player Predrag Savovic, and Baldwin High pitcher Shannon Tabion.

The lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the noon program.

Kimura sets record

Hawaii Prep graduate Caitlin Kimura set a Haverford College season record for 3-pointers in Wednesday's loss to Muhlenberg.

Kimura, a freshman point guard for the Fords, hit three 3-pointers for a total of 31 on the year. The old record was 30 set in the 1991-'92 season.

Kimura leads Haverford in minutes played and assists, and is second in scoring and steals.

Tajima cited by Lobos

Iolani graduate Scott Tajima, a sophomore at the University of New Mexico, was named the Lobos' Athlete of the Week.

Tajima is one of two starting catchers for the Lobo baseball team. He is currently the team's leading hitter with a .500 batting average.

In the opening game of last weekend's game with New Mexico State, Tajima went 3-for-4 with an RBI double. He also hit a two-run double in the second game.

Nationals at Kapalua

The U.S. Tennis Association's Boys and Girls National Open Championships will be held at the Tennis Garden and Village Tennis Center at Kapalua, Maui, Feb. 16-20.

Play is in singles and doubles for ages 16-18. This is the first time a USTA national junior tournament has been held in Hawaii.
