Stardust gets
bigger, better

Stardust, the classy vocal instrumental band high in Sheraton's Hanohano Room, is getting bigger and better. This band not only sounds good, it looksMug shot good. Former Broadway performer Rocky Brown and 1998 "Miss Hawaii" Jennifer Hera are fashionplates in their gowns; and leader-arranger Brian Robertshaw, on piano and trombone, and guitarist John Valentine wear tuxes. All sing. The women are also percussionists. The mixed plate they dish up for listening and dancing Monday through Saturday is tasty. Pop, swing, rock and Latin are the ingredients. On weekends, drummer Stacy

Tangonan and Larry Cook on sax are added. Valentine's vocals of "Jump Jivin' " and "Smooth," the Santana hit, are strong. Brown's "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," Hera's "You Gotta Be" and Robertshaw's "L-O-V-E" are big numbers ...

Driving the message home

My pals at Servco/Lexus such as Mark Fukunaga, Andy Nakano, Leighton Migita, Roy Kuboyama, Kevin Honda, Arvid Galbraith, Harry Valenzuela and Dennis Wagatsuma have to be all revved up after Lexus received tons of publicity from top Democrats opposed to President Bush's huge tax cut plan because it favors the wealthy. CNN and other media picked up on the Democratic congressional brass standing with a Lexus and a muffler saying that savings from the Bush tax cut would be enough to enable the rich to buy a new Lexus but the savings for those with lower incomes would only enable them to buy a muffler ...

DANCING ON: Aussies know how to have fun and they will be having plenty of that at the Australia Day Ball, thrown by Aussie Consul General Peter Woolcott and the Australian American Chamber of Commerce board, next Saturday at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. The Clyde Pound band will play for dancing. Tickets are $75. Call 526-2242 ... The Heart Ball is scheduled Feb. 24 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. Nueva Vida will play music. Tickets are $250. Call 538-7021 ...

Genoa Keawe and Hilo's Haili Church Choir, which 176 years ago was the first group to sing hymns in Hawaiian, will be inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Feb. 20 at the Hawaii Theatre. Besides the honorees, other performers will include: Nina Kealiiwahamana, Mahi Beamer, Iwalani Kahalewai, the Kahauanu Lake Singers, Haunani Apoliona, Piilani Smith, hula dancers and Genoa's son Gary Aiko. Lake is producer. Anything he is connected with is bound to be a success ... Look for Kirk Matthews to be looking even sharper on KHON-TV. He was at Sak's Off 5th outlet at Waikele Sunday buying suits and sport coats. His wife, Linda Coble, was helping with his selections. Society of Seven leader Tony Ruivivar is another Saks shopper ...

Punish that villain

Having known someone who spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair after being hit by a golf ball, it really angers me when golfers intentionally hit balls into other players on the course to speed them up. But this case involving an idiot who hit golf balls into Rainbow Wahine Stadium when a game was being played and injured a Iolani softball player takes the cake. The young lady lost a tooth and suffered damage to other teeth and her lip. It could have been worse. A suspect has been arrested. If he's the culprit, I hope they throw the book at him ...

THE END: Mountain Apple's Jon de Mello sent me a letter the other day and ended it with, "Aloha, don't leave home without it." Now that's a winner. I'm gonna borrow it, Jon ...
