Motorola to slash 4,000 jobs worldwide

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- Motorola Inc., the No. 2 maker of cellular telephones, said it will cut 4,000 semiconductor jobs worldwide, or 12 percent of its microchip workers, because demand has slowed.

Motorola already has laid off temporary and contract workers, spokesman Ken Phillips said, and the company hopes to use attrition and voluntary and involuntary severance packages for the rest. The cuts are expected to continue into the second quarter, he said. The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company has struggled with falling demand for its cell phones and semiconductors because a weakening economy has cooled sales and left Motorola's customers oversupplied, Bloomberg News reported. Motorola's stock closed down 92 cents today at $18.90.
