15-year-old arrested in carnival stabbing

A 15-year-old boy was arrested yesterday in connection with the stabbing of another teen at the Punahou Carnival Friday night.

Police said the stabbing occurred after someone in a group of boys with the suspect stared at the 15-year-old victim as he was walking into the carnival at about 9:45 p.m.

He was then punched and "mobbed" by the group of boys, police said.

The victim, who suffered two wounds in the chest, was upgraded from guarded to fair condition Monday, police said. Another boy with him suffered a cut to the back and was treated and released.

A 17-year-old was arrested Friday night, but police said it is unclear if he was involved in the stabbing.

Detectives believe the stabbing was gang related.

Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect at 3:30 p.m. yesterday. He was released pending investigation.

Police officer faces domestic abuse charge

KEALAKEKUA, Hawaii -- A Big Island police officer has been charged with abuse of a household member in a struggle in which his estranged wife was injured, police said.

The officer was identified as Warren Won Ho Ke, 38, assigned to patrol duty in the Kau District.

Ke's wife, 38, suffered cuts and bruises when she was pushed to the ground during a struggle about 4:30 p.m. Monday at Honomalino, South Kona, police said.

Ke was arrested at a bed-and-breakfast establishment in the Hawaiian Ranchos subdivision yesterday morning and arraigned at Kona District Court yesterday afternoon. He was placed on supervisory release and placed on desk duty pending the outcome of his case.

Hawaiian quilt show at Parker Ranch

The annual Hawaiian Quilt Show will be held at Parker Ranch in Waimea on the Big Island Feb. 17-18.

The Ka Hui Kapa Apana O Waimea quilting group will host the show at the ranch's historic home, Puopelu.

The public is invited to view the work, learn the art of Hawaiian quilting and purchase quilted items.

Hawaiian music will be played throughout the day.

Motorists, prepare for various roadwork delays

A 24-hour lane closure on Halona Street in Kalihi-Palama for roadwork began at 8 p.m. yesterday and will be in effect until 3 p.m. Friday.

The left lane of Halona Street is closed to H-1 freeway westbound.

Other H-1 lane and ramp closures in effect this week include the following from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

Bullet King Street off ramp from H-1 westbound for guardrail work

Bullet Lane, ramp and shoulder closures between Pali Overpass and Kapiolani Interchange for guardrail work

Bullet Lane, ramp and shoulder closures at various locations for electrical installation work

Bullet Lane closures and traffic detours on Lunalilo Street for concrete gutter work and waterline work

Bullet Lunalilo off ramp of H-1 westbound closed for waterline work

Bullet Lane closures on Ward Avenue and Kinau Street for waterline work

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and allow for extra travel time or take an alternate route.

Kauai car crash victim was Waimea man

LIHUE -- Kauai police yesterday identified the man killed in a one-car automobile accident Monday morning as Nicoda Reeves, 21, of Waimea. An unidentified 22-year-old man remains hospitalized at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

Officers said the vehicle was traveling southbound on Halewili Road near Kalaheo at 8:49 a.m. when it left the road and struck several ironwood trees.

Both men were thrown from the car.

Honolulu detectives investigate stabbing

Honolulu police detectives were called to Waianae to investigate a stabbing at 86-144 Puhano Street at about 7 a.m.

Details were sketchy this morning.

Officials at St. Francis West Medical Center said a 47-year-old man was brought in with a stab wound this morning and was taken into surgery. He is reported in stable condition.

Police hunt 2 who were to meet shooting victim

HILO -- Police are asking for help in identifying two people who were to meet with a 19-year-old man found shot to death Jan. 31 in Pepeekeo, north of Hilo.

The victim, Kallen James Agliam of Pepeekeo, was supposed to meet someone in Pepeekeo at 4 p.m. and another person at Hakalau at 5 p.m., police said.

A passerby found Agliam dead, clothed only in shorts and shoes, at the side of a road leading to the Hilo Coast Power Co. at 5:17 p.m.

Hilo man is being held in throat-slashing case

KAILUA-KONA -- A 61-year Hilo man is being held by Kona police for attempted murder in the slashing of another man's throat Monday night, police said.

The suspect and the victim, Carl Whittaker, 46, of Ocean View subdivision, were drinking at a third man's house in Ocean View when the attack took place about 8:25 p.m., police said.

A Fire Department helicopter flew the victim to Kona Community Hospital, where he was in stable condition following surgery.

Boy, 13, arrested after fiery prank on teacher

A 13-year-old boy was arrested yesterday after he poured, then ignited, gasoline behind his auto mechanics teacher, police said.

The incident occurred at Hale Na'aupono, a Waianae Behavioral Health Center. The 37-year-old teacher was starting a vehicle by priming the carburetor with gasoline when the student poured some on the floor and ignited it, police said.

The teen said it was a joke, police said. The teacher was not injured and the fire did not cause any damage.

Escaped mental patient returned to hospital

Police located a 46-year-old patient in Honolulu yesterday after he escaped from the Hawaii State Hospital.

On Monday, at about 9 p.m., staff members at the hospital reported a court-committed patient escaped. He was found at 7:05 yesterday morning on Makaloa Street and Kalakaua Avenue.

Louvers lead police to burglary arrest

Police arrested a 19-year-old man for burglary after discovering four wooden louvers, apparently taken from a Pearl City High School classroom, in his car.

Police stopped two vehicles in the parking lot after a silent alarm at 1:44 a.m. yesterday. They noticed the louvers in one vehicle and upon searching the school discovered a room was missing that exact number of louvers. Police say they also recovered stolen items.
