Wahine beat Bulldogs,
face Wolf Pack next

Star-Bulletin staff

FRESNO, Calif. -- Having survived a few Bulldog bites, Hawaii faces the Nevada Wolf Pack in their den tomorrow.

"Nevada is the best home team in the Western Athletic Conference," Hawaii coach Vince Goo said.

Goo was speaking shortly after his team lost a 10-point halftime lead, then rebuilt half of it to defeat host Fresno State, 65-60, last night at North Gym.

Playing in Reno entails more than coping with the 5,500-foot altitude.

"The Wolf Pack have depth and talent and are well coached," Goo said. "It's a huge challenge for us."

Numbers speak loudly for Nevada, which is 9-1 in the Lawler Events Center. The Wolf Pack have won all four WAC games played there with a 17-point victory margin.

Last night Nevada crushed San Jose State, 86-57, holding the Spartans' leading scorer Atari Parker without a basket.

Nevada was led by sophomore guard Ashley Bastian's career-high 21 points.

Against FSU, the Wahine trailed, 23-19, with about 10 minutes left in the first half, then turned up the defensive intensity. That led to a 22-8 run and a 41-31 halftime lead.

UH shot just 25 percent from the field after intermission, but hung tough with defense, Goo said.

Crystal Lee led the Wahine with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

"Crystal played well, took it to the basket in the second half," Goo said.

The Hawaii-Nevada game will be broadcast live at 9 a.m. tomorrow on KCCN radio (1420 AM).
