To fellow employees, U.S. Labor Administrator David Boback was the unofficial mayor of the federal building on Ala Moana.

So loved and respected was he by the labor community that when he died Jan. 25, the U.S. flag at Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Federal Building flew at half-staff in his honor.

Two of Hawaii's congressional delegation and federal employees attended an impromptu memorial service, organized by co-workers, and reflected on his numerous accomplishments and acts of kindness.

"His loss is tremendous," said Tom Cestare of the National Labor Relations Board.

"We all said, 'What do we do now that he's not here?' "

Boback, 63, died of complications at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick, N.J., while visiting his sister.

The son of a coal miner, Boback was born in Nanticoke, Pa. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed at various bases, domestic and foreign, including Pearl Harbor, retiring as master chief petty officer in 1975. He also graduated from UH-West Oahu.

After retiring from the Navy, Boback moved to Hawaii with his wife, Carol, his high school sweetheart. He then embarked on a long career with the U.S. Department of Labor, serving for four years as assistant district director of the department's Labor, Wage and Hour Division.

He was also instrumental in retaining the cost of living adjustment that allows federal employees in Hawaii to receive a 25 percent salary allowance.

Boback is survived by wife Carol; sister Hlafera; brother-in-law Robert Markowski; sister-in-law Helga Markowski; nieces Jayne and Ashley Rose and Laura Markowski; nephews Michael Markowski and Jerry Rose.

A military honor service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of David Boback to the Assistance League of Hawaii at 378 N. School St.
