Al and April
all smiles

The Masini file: April Masini is all smiles these days because the dentist who makes that smile so wide, Dr. Wynn Okuda, is Mug shotthe lead singer in The Matrix Band, the same group whose keyboard player is her N.Y. "celebrity" dentist, Dr. Larry Rosenthaul (whose patients included Ben Affleck, Christie Brinkley, Tom Cruise and Matt Damon). The lead singer is former Miss Hawaii and Miss America Carolyn Sapp. All profits from their performances go to help battered women through "Give Back a Smile." And did you know that one definition of "matrix" is "formative cells of a tooth"? ... April's ex, TV producer Al Masini ("Entertainment Tonight," etc.) is also smiling these days, as he gaily fends off inquiries that he's about to take his young girlfriend, Charlyn Honda, as his bride. She's already comfortable with the idea of making Al's $12 million Hawaii Loa Drive manse her home ...

TWO weeks ago we itemed that hot new entertainer Hoku Ho was strolling hand in hand through the Kahala Mall with a young man and wearing something "that for all the world looked like a wedding band." Now papa Don Ho confirms that Hoku was quietly married more than a year ago to her young manager ... A common error has cropped up in a Midweek headline over a story about NFL cheerleaders here for the Pro Bowl. In a bit of wordplay about "Pomp and Circumstance," the headline read "Pompoms and Circumstance." Trouble is, the word is "pompon." ...

Shots just $1

NORMALLY Murphy's Bar & Grill wouldn't be serving shots for a dollar, but that's what owner Don Murphy is doing these nights. Along with City Bank exec Caryn Morita, Murphy is co-chairman of Coaches vs. Cancer, the program designed to raise money for patient services and research in Hawaii. Last year, the UH men's and women's programs raised $127,000, No. 2 nationally out of more than 400 schools participating. This year, Murphy came up with the "buck a shot" scheme. Before home games, the publican can be found outside the Stan Sheriff Center with a basket, a ball and a challenge -- hit a three pointer. If you miss, it costs a buck. If you make it, you keep the ball. Why does Murphy, who's involved in so many fund-raising activities, get involved in this one? Listed on the basketball among the sponsors is another fellow named Murphy -- Don's father, a cancer victim ...

IT was with great relief that Liberty House CEO John Monahan received the decision by Bankruptcy Judge Lloyd King to allow the retailer to emerge from Chapter 11 reorganization debt free after nearly three long years. The good feeling continued when, flanked by loyal execs and lawyers, Monahan left the courthouse and strolled down Bishop Street and into a Chinese New Year celebration, with lion dance and burning firecrackers signaling good fortune and a new beginning ...

Message picture

NOT one to sit idly by while awaiting word on the fate of "Baywatch Hawaii" is Angela Laprete, assistant to producer Greg Bonann. She's been working on a short film called "The Message" with collaborator James Sereno. They shot two days in and around Kawaiaha'o Church this week for what Laprete calls a "no-budget film." Some actors from the UH drama department were cast in the film, a comical view of how a message can be misconstrued as it's passed from person to person ...
