Witness in Ewa
shooting admits he
lied to police

An 18-year-old Ewa man testified he saw Keoni Brunson pull out a gun and shoot another man during a fight that broke out at a birthday party in Ewa Beach last May.

But the witness also admitted yesterday he lied to police, under oath at an earlier hearing, and was having difficulty testifying now because he was "scared."

"Something might happen to me," said Anthony Quisagan, who knows Brunson, also of Ewa.

Brunson, 18, is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Robert Rodemio, 18, of Kalihi, also a guest at the party.

Defense attorney Myles Breiner said during opening statements that Brunson had gone to the party earlier but was at home at the time of the shooting and that Rodemio's death occurred because the group from Kalihi had provoked the guests from Ewa.

Under questioning by Deputy Prosecutor Franklin Pacarro Jr., Quisagan admitted he made false statements to police about what he witnessed that night.

Pacarro said Quisagan's deception is consistent with what happened at a preliminary hearing in September where he said one thing, but later flip-flopped because he was afraid. Despite the lies, Quisagan yesterday said he saw Brunson with the gun that night. "I seen him firing."
