It’s Mardi Gras
time at Punahou

Star-Bulletin

The juniors at Punahou School will be up late tonight slicing and dicing ham hocks, lomi salmon and green onions, and getting ready for the annual Punahou School Carnival taking place tomorrow and Saturday on the school grounds.

The theme is "Mardi Gras," which will be reflected in the decor as revelers line up at booths for malassadas, Hawaiian plates, Portuguese bean soup, chili and gyros.

As always, E.K. Fernandez will provide 20 action-packed rides, there will be games of skill, a white-elephant sale, fresh produce, haku lei, ceramics, plants and a live auction. Bid for a stunning single strand of 27 black Tahitian pearls at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Cornuelle Lecture Hall of the Punahou Science Center.

And the Punahou Carnival Art Gallery, considered by many collectors to be the best art show in the Pacific, has gotten bigger. More than 2,500 pieces of art in a variety of media by some 200 local artists and Mardi Gras masks -- made by attorneys Louise Ing, Rai Saint Chu, Joanne Yukimura (yes, the former Kauai mayor) and a host of volunteers -- will be for sale in the Punahou Science Center Gates Workshop. Not all works can be exhibited at the same time, so new works will be made available as pieces sell.

Carnival hours are 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. both days. Admission is free. Proceeds will benefit the Punahou financial aid program and student activities.

The school is at 1601 Punahou St. Parking is limited so the public is being encouraged to take TheBus. For more information, call the school at 944-5711.
