UH considers
moving Iowa State
season opener

The University of Hawaii's season opener in football against Iowa State may be moved to Ames, Iowa, which would allow the Warriors to play a 13th game this fall.

Several sources confirmed yesterday that UH athletic department officials will move the game if it will be televised nationally and if the Warriors receive a guarantee of $500,000.

This year is a 14-week season that will allow all NCAA teams but Hawaii to play 12 games. Hawaii can play 13 games, as part of the NCAA's Hawaii exemption rule.

It would be the third time Hawaii has played in the state of Iowa. The two previous games were at the University of Iowa, with the Rainbows losing both of them, 34-0 in 1956 and 53-10 in 1991.

Hawaii is currently scheduled to play Iowa State on Sept. 1 in the opener at Aloha Stadium. But if the site is changed, the date may change as well.

The athletic department is looking for a team to fill the puka if it is decided to switch sites.

The Warriors have a bye on Sept. 22, but that's the only one, unless the Iowa State meeting is moved up to the last weekend in August. Hawaii's second game of the season, against Division I-AA Montana on Sept. 8, was moved to Maui last fall. The Warriors then travel to Nevada on Sept. 15 to face the Wolf Pack.

Iowa State is coming off an outstanding season. The Cyclones finished 9-3, including a victory over the University of Pittsburgh in the Insight.com Bowl in December.

In other UH football news, Joe Correia was granted a medical hardship by the Western Athletic Conference. A foot injury early last year caused him to miss most of the 2000 season.

"I got my clearance from the WAC, but I may have to wait to hear from the NCAA before I know for sure," said Correia, who had a redshirt year available to him. "But it looks good."

Spring football will begin on March 1 and end the weekend before spring break. Unlike last year, the players will not take a week-long break after 10 days of practice.

"I like it better this way," senior wideout Craig Stutzmann said. "Playing straight through is better."
