The Chaminade men's basketball team turned McCabe Gym into the OK Corral last night, winning a shootout with Montana State-Billings, 112-95.

It was the third consecutive Pacific West Conference win in a row for the Silverswords (12-8, 6-5), and it came at the expense of the highest scoring team in the conference.

Chaminade About 150 fans watched as the Yellowjackets (13-6, 6-5), who came to Hawaii before last weekend as the Pacific Division leader, dropped their third game in a row. (They also lost last Friday and Saturday at Hawaii-Hilo.)

All of MSU-Billings' conference losses have come on the road, in part because the Yellowjackets rank dead last overall in the PacWest in scoring defense.

"We figured there wasn't going to be much D," Chaminade coach Aaron Griess said. "We haven't been defending well and their games are always high scoring. We don't want it to be like that, we want to defend, but as long as we're on top we'll take it."

The teams exchanged baskets at a frenetic pace for much of the first half, and the score was already 40-35 with 6:50 left until halftime.

With reserve swingman David Toya leading the way on both ends of the floor, however, the Silverswords began to pull away.

Toya hit a 3-pointer -- assisted by C.J. Cowgill -- then rammed home another two points on an alley-oop pass from Cowgill with 2:53 until the half, making the score 53-40. He also contributed six rebounds, four steals and two assists to go along with his 17 first-half points.

"I'm an all-around player and coach can put me in any position," said Toya, who finished with 25 points. "He has been relying on me to bring a spark as the first one off the bench."

The halftime score was an eye-popping 60-47 in favor of the Silverswords, who outshot the Yellowjackets, 62 to 53 percent.

MSU-Billings appeared for most of the second half to run out of ammunition. The Silverswords matched their biggest lead of the game at 24 points (92-68) with 6:10 left to play.

With Chaminade still up by 21 with just over three and a half minutes to play, the Yellowjackets made one last furious rally. They outscored the Silverswords on an 18-6 run to pull within single digits at 102-93 with 1:20 remaining.

But MSU-Billings managed just another basket, while Chaminade scored on eight consecutive free throws and a slam dunk to seal the victory.

"I think it's very, very difficult on the road in our league," MSU-Billings coach Craig Carse said. "When we're at home, it's the other way around. We just didn't attack like I thought we should have."

Toya finished three steals short of a triple-double, with 13 rebounds and seven steals. Cowgill had a game-high 27 points.

"I'm real satisfied with how the whole team played," Toya said. "We pretty much needed a big win against a team that was supposed to be good like that."
