Leilehua survives furious
comeback bid

THE Leilehua basketball team had heard about Pearl City's comeback wins.

The Mules almost fell victim to one last night in a playoff-caliber Oahu Interscholastic Association game.

Leilehua squandered a 24-point first half lead but managed to pull out a 74-70 win at Pearl City to move into first place in the Western Division.

"(Pearl City) comes out and gives up the lead, but they always come back to win," Leilehua assistant coach Jayson Kauwenaole said. "They did that against Campbell and Mililani. We knew that's the type of team they are. We knew they were going to come back and fight."

The Mules are 5-0, and play their final four regular season games in a span of nine days. The Chargers slipped to 6-1 with just two games left.

The game at Pearl City started at a frantic pace in front of a packed gym that was pro-Leilehua.

The Chargers missed eight shots on their first four possessions and the Mules jumped out to a 13-0 lead five minutes into the game.

By the end of the first quarter, Leilehua led 26-2 -- and Pearl City was 0-for-14 from the field.

"We were too intense, too pumped up," Chargers coach Mark Tawarahara said. "We came out too excited and we were overshooting."

The Mules went to the opposite extreme -- connecting on 10 of their first 11 shots.

Leilehua's defense swarmed all over Pearl City, forcing turnovers and scoring on easy fastbreaks.

Pearl City missed its first 18 shots, but Terry Ayers finally broke the spell with a third-chance layup 10 1/2 minutes into the game.

"I was extremely surprised we came out like we did, with the intensity," Kauwenaole said. "I wish we could have finished off strong, but we didn't. That was impressive in the beginning, but we knew they were going to come back."

The Chargers chipped into the lead, whittling it down to 39-23 at halftime.

When Terry Ayers -- who entered the game with a league-high 24-point average -- scooped up a loose ball in the lane and scored with just under six minutes left, the Mules' lead was only six, 57-51.

Kris Liederbach hit his second trey of the game minutes later and Ayers hit a pair of free throws with 2:32 left to give Pearl City a 64-63 lead.

That lead lasted for as long as it took Leilehua to take the ball downcourt and find an open John Dolac on the perimeter.

Dolac buried a trey to give the Mules the lead. Leilehua made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to preserve the lead, and the win.

Marshall finished with a game-high 23 points and three other Mules reached double figures.

Ayers was held to 14 points.
