Other than football coach June Jones, whose compensation reportedly amounts to about $400,000 a year, the dean of the medical school continues to earn the highest salary at the University of Hawaii.

In the university's annual salary report to the Legislature, Edwin Cadman, dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine and interim dean of the School of Public Health, is listed with a $330,000 yearly salary. But the report does not include the salaries of coaches.

Jim Manke, university spokesman, said the university is not allowed to give exact coach salaries because they fall under a separate contract and bargaining unit.

The top 10 salary earners in the report include administrators of science programs and two professors/researchers at the Cancer Research Center.

Cadman's salary is the highest by far compared to the other top-10 salary earners and nearly twice the income of Kenneth Mortimer who serves both as president for the 10-campus system and chancellor of the Manoa campus.

Mortimer, with $167,184, was making the fifth highest salary in 1999, but the latest report, which includes salaries as of the end of October, places him in seventh place. The two new administrators that earn more money are Rolf-Peter Kudritzki, director of the Institute for Astronomy, and Andrew G. Hashimoto, director of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

Also new on the list is David McClain, dean of the College of Business Administration, who earns slightly less than Mortimer.
