Blaze battlers

By Ken Sakamoto, Star-Bulletin
Retired Battalion Chief Mel Mendonca stands next to the
1937 Seagrave pumper he drove when he worked at the
Waialua fire station. The pumper was stationed at Pearl
Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack and has several
bullet holes to prove it. A blessing ceremony was held
yesterday morning for the Honolulu Fire Department's
Station 1, Central Fire Station, on South Beretania Street,
near Bishop Street. The station recently upgraded its
infrastructure and electrical, plumbing, and water systems.
