This year's Hawaii Pacific baseball schedule has the Sea Warriors playing opponents from all three NCAA divisions.

Coach Allan Sato's team opens the season tomorrow with the first of four doubleheaders in five days against Sonoma State, one of the top teams in the West Region.

HPU plays defending NCAA Division II champion Cal State Chico twice during its April road trip.

The Sea Warriors also have eight games scheduled against Division I opponents.

Four come in the Rainbow Easter Tournament. HPU also plays single games home and away against San Jose State and ends the regular season with a twin bill at Hawaii-Hilo

"I think the schedule worked out pretty good," Sato said. "Obviously, pitching will be a factor for us and Sonoma State.

"But having a month off after that series gives us a chance to recuperate and evaluate. Sonoma State is a good program, a good measuring stick."

The Sea Warriors return Feb. 22 against Division II George Fox (Ore.), then play a six-game series against Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills and an eight-game series against Teikyo-Post from Waterbury, Conn.

Sato hopes the seven-game California trip in April helps the Sea Warriors' postseason chances if their season is going well.

Two years ago HPU finished with a record of 32-12. But not playing the final month of the season hurt when teams were selected for the West Region playoffs.

"April is solidified and that's a good thing, but the key for us going to the playoffs will be how well we do on the road trip," Sato said.
