Fed funds keep poison
center open 24 hours

Hawaii Poison Center, through acquisition of emergency federal funds, will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through this year.

The center, staffed by registered nurses specially trained in poison information, provides assessment and treatment recommendations by telephone for poisonings. Its number is 941-4411.

Donations are still needed to help the center remain open beyond 2001. All tax-deductible donations may be made payable to the Hawaii Poison Center and mailed to it at 1319 Punahou St., Honolulu 96826.

Arthritis group
honors Castle's work

Castle Medical Center will be honored for its efforts against arthritis in an event sponsored by the Hawaii Branch of the Arthritis Foundation and entertainer Don Ho.

The second annual "I'll Remember You" will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 at Ho's Island Grill in Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Featured will be entertainers Don Tiki, Teresa Bright, Lopaka Colon and Na Hoku Pa, among others. Rodney Villanueva will be master of ceremonies.

Tickets are $50 per person, including entertainment, two standard cocktails, pupus and surprises.

Limited seating is by prepaid ticket only. Call the Arthritis Foundation, 942-3636, to purchase tickets. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

All proceeds will be donated to the Hawaii Branch of the Arthritis Foundation in Castle's name.

20-foot surf expected to hit north shores

Giant surf is expected to pound the north shores of Oahu and Kauai with heights of 20 to 25 feet Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Northwest swells bringing the waves are expected to arrive about midnight tomorrow.

A storm in the Western Pacific is producing the high surf.

Today, surf is expected to be 10 to 12 feet on Oahu and Kauai's north shores.

The National Weather Service issued a high-surf advisory for all islands this morning.

City gets $3.7 million to help homeless

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $3.7 million to the city to help build comprehensive and coordinated systems of facilities and services to help the homeless.

Programs that will receive the aid include:

Bullet Homeless Solutions Inc.: Kokea Family Shelter ($165,395).
Bullet U.S. Veterans Initiative: Barbers Point Veterans in Progress ($1 million).
Bullet Steadfast Housing: Transitional Group Home ($94,762).
Bullet Gregory House Programs ($1.3 million).
Bullet Women in Need: Family Resources Center ($308,167).
Bullet Legal Aid Society of Hawaii: Holistic Legal Services Project ($194,495).
Bullet Hale Kipa Youth Outreach Project ($600,000)

3 isles' bus projects receive $1.2 million

Hawaii, Maui and Kauai will get $1.2 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for bus capital projects, according to U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.

This will enable Kauai to complete construction of a maintenance facility at Lihue; Maui to purchase three replacement buses and four replacement vans; and Hawaii County to purchase two expansion commuter buses.

The bill provides an additional $1 million for the City and County of Honolulu.

UH receives $450,000 for geriatrics center

The University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine has received a $450,000 renewal grant to support the Center of Excellence in Geriatrics for the next three years.

The center, housed at Kuakini Medical Center, was created to develop academic leaders in geriatric medicine and address the shortage of faculty and clinicians in the field.

The grant came from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City, a private philanthropy focusing on health care for the elderly.

Neighborhood board deadline tomorrow

The deadline to file for this year's Oahu neighborhood board elections is 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

All 454 seats are up for grabs. Ballots will be distributed in mid-March and the results announced on May 1.

Waialae-Kahala man held in Ena Road knifing

Police have arrested a 20-year-old Waialae-Kahala man who allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old man in front of a nightclub at 478 Ena Road early yesterday morning.

The victim and four friends were arguing with the suspect and three friends near the 7-Eleven store when the victim was stabbed with an unknown object, which may have been a knife, police said. The suspect and friends fled into the club, where witnesses helped identify him. The victim was taken to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Young man robs Mililani convenience store

Police are looking for a man in his mid-20s who allegedly robbed a Mililani convenience store at 1:16 a.m. yesterday.

According to police, the suspect entered the Island Mini-Mart on Kipapa Drive and asked the clerk for change for a $100 bill. He then informed the clerk that he was robbing the store and that he had a .22-caliber handgun. He fled after the clerk gave him money from the safe. No weapon was seen, police said.

Three men in car robbed by pair in Kailua

Police are looking for two men who allegedly forced three men to take them to Kailua and then robbed them. Police said the suspects stopped three 18-year-olds at Keeaumoku and Kona streets at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday and asked them to take them to Keolu Elementary School.

Once they reached their destination, a suspect, 18-to-20 years old, held the car's locks down so the victims couldn't open the doors and demanded their money, gold chains and watches. He said he had a gun, but no weapon was observed. The second suspect, 15-to-18, remained silent and both fled on foot, police said.

Alcohol may have caused Ewa Beach moped crash

Police say alcohol may have caused a 32-year-old man to lose control of his moped and crash into an unattended parked station wagon in Ewa Beach last night.

The Ewa Beach man remains in critical condition this morning at Queen's Medical Center, where he was taken last night.

The man fell off his moped and hit his head on the roadway at Palani Street near Komana Street at 10:05 p.m., police said. He was first taken to St. Francis West Hospital in critical condition.

Woman arrested in forgery case

A 38-year-old Honolulu woman wanted for identity theft was arrested at 12:30 a.m. today in a second-degree forgery case.

Police initially arrested Lianne F. Nakaji on a warrant at 1700 Ala Moana Boulevard 11:20 p.m. yesterday.CrimeStoppers and the police department had asked for the public's help in searching for Nakaji.
