Murphy shows
isle spirit

AN Evening of Celtic Kokua is what they're callingMug shot the latest fund-raiser Don Murphy is hosting Thursday at Murphy's Bar & Grill. This one he holds special, since it directly benefits someone from Ireland. You may recall Erin O'Conner of Kinsale, Ireland, who was in a Jeep accident here last fall, resulting in the loss of her legs. Now O'Conner has to be moved from the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific to a facility in Florida which specializes in her kind of injury. Murphy has put together an evening consisting of a buffet of Irish cuisine, entertainment from Irish Hearts, Irish step dancing, bagpipes and auction items donated by the Daughters of Erin and the Irish Chamber of Commerce, all for just $20. And since Murphy and wife Marian are hosting the entire evening, all proceeds will go to the O'Conner family. Erin and her mother will be there, since the event is also a late holiday party for them. The other night, a couple visiting from Texas heard about the evening from Patrick, the Irish bartender, and donated $100 to the fund. To thank them, Murph picked up their dinner tab, and they in turn contributed another $50. Said Murph, "The season of giving is year-round in Hawaii, pretty much the way it is in Ireland, as well." ...

UNITED honcho in Hawaii Norm Reeder, hearing that the father of entertainer Jimmy Borges had died and that Borges planned to fly to San Francisco to bring his dad's ashes back to the islands, showed why United calls itself the "Friendly Skies." He sent Borges a first class ticket to make the trip ...

Boo-boos

RESTAURATEUR Aaron Placourakis owns both Aaron's atop the Ala Moana Hotel and Sarento's atop the Ilikai, and now he's bought Carelli's on the Beach in Kihei. The other day I called it Aaron's, when in fact it's Sarento's on the Beach ...Then there's reader Ellie Williston who writes that "Surely you mean 'normally' instead of 'nominally' -- no such word." I don't know about Ellie's dictionary, but "nominally" is in mine, and that's just what I meant ... And resume writer Penelope Hazzard, who is careful about her words, is upset with the story on Roy Yamaguchi in Hawaii Business magazine. It refers to "momentos" from his travels, when the writer meant to say "mementos," a common error ...

IT may not be a major Grammy Award, but in the Best Children's Record category is one by Kenny Loggins, on which Hapa performed ... The Elton John concerts Friday and Saturday at the Arena have long been sold out, but KSSK program director Jeff Silver managed to scoop up two seats for Friday. He and girlfriend Jodi will be leaving directly from the concert to catch a flight that will ultimately take him to Atlanta. He's accepted a promotion and will be heading up programming for "The Peach," a Clear Channel megastation ... Entertainer Henry Kapono is one of the busiest guys in island showbiz. Not only is he performing at various venues, but hopes that by April he'll be opening the Pier Bar at the Aloha Tower Market Place ...

Morley the merrier

AUTHOR and critic Sheridan Morley, son of late actor Robert Morley, has been a friend since we were both at UH in 1963. I've visited him frequently in London and he was last here for the Lodge at Koele's "Visiting Artist Program." Now he'll be back in Hawaii briefly. He's lecturing on the QEII between L.A. and Sydney and will have a stopover in Honolulu later this month ...
