Freshman scores 27
points in Iolani win

Derrick Low, a 6-foot freshman guard, began his varsity boys' basketball career at Iolani in stellar fashion, scoring a game-high 27 points to lead the Red Raiders past Punahou, 55-43, last night at Iolani Gym.

"I thought we played really good defense against him," said Punahou coach Alan Lum.

"He (Low) had a couple of shots where he jumped over us and he shot balls where we had hands in his face. That's a credit to the boy."

Punahou started the game on a 9-2 run but Low scored eight of the Red Raiders' 17 points in the first quarter to give Iolani a four-point lead.

In the second half, Punahou tried to go to big-man Dane Uperesa in the middle but fell behind quickly.

"We made some nice runs where we forced a lot of turnovers and capitalized. When we did that we were successful," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

With sophomore sensation Bobby Nash saddled with foul trouble, Red Raider guards Bobby Webster, Travis McGaughy and Low went after the Buffanblu with a full-court press that forced turnovers and led to easy layups.

"Our guards played well," Mugiishi said. "We fouled too much and gave them too many baskets on free throws. But when you ask them to be aggressive, sometimes it happens."

Punahou utilized a 1-3-1 zone defense in an effort to contain Low but he consistently found the soft spots in the zone to hit short jumpers.

"He played well. None of his shot attempts were forced, they were all within the pattern of the offense," said Mugiishi.

Low was the man for the Red Raiders. He scored 11 points in the last 11 minutes of the game after Nash left with his fourth foul. He also dished the ball to McGaughy for baskets on the baseline and played outstanding defense.

"People always talk about Derrick Low and his point production, but he's becoming a complete player and that makes me happy," Mugiishi said.

Travis McGaughy added 11 points for Iolani. Lucas Love led the Buffanblu with 10 points.
