Parents sing for
boy choir

THE Honolulu Boy Choir's final concert of the year will be Sunday at Harris United Methodist Church, but the boys already got their collective Christmas gift. It came in the form of an ohana bash the day after Christmas when the choir gathered to feast on roasted suckling pig and other Mug shotpotluck dishes brought to Harris United. The highlight of the party came when more than 50 of the parents were called onto the choral risers used by the boys to sing the group's Christmas repertoire in the traditional Boy Choir fashion: Always smiling, no fidgeting, scratching, eyes on the choral director etc. The boys, naturally, found the whole thing hilarious, and none more so than Frank DeLima. The comic is a big fan of the boy choir and has even recorded with them. He couldn't stop laughing at the parents' boy-like performance, before cracking up the 300 or so in attendance with his own antics ...

SOMEHOW it seems appropriate that the Red Hot Mamas of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho will be marching in the George W. Bush Inaugural parade in Washington. And just to show we can find a local angle anywhere, Hawaii will be sort of represented in the group by Jeanne Trebor- MacConnell, a UH alum and real estate woman in Honolulu who is married to Barrie "T-Mac," who was with KSSK Radio. The two have retired in Coeur d'Alene and Jeanne is one of the 40 women in the group, which has won many awards for parade participation. What sets them apart is that they dress up in housedresses and funny hats, tall ones loaded with ersatz grocery items, and they all push shopping carts. The Mamas were chosen from 300 competing to represent Idaho in the Inaugural parade as one of 80 marching units. Watch for them -- they may steal the show ...

Single Survivors

THE show "Survivor" was the top-rated series on TV last year, and it has sparked a few imitators. But none seems as destined for success as "Temptation Island." Not only does it use the remote helplessness of those on "Survivor," it also tosses in bits of "Real World" and even "Baywatch." And with 26 singles in various states of undress, it should attract an audience, albeit not the viewers of Public Broadcasting ...

TO all those people -- largely merchants -- trying to drum up Dec. 31 as the entryway to the new millennium, sorry, but I'm not buying. I know all the arguments as to why it should be, but hey, we saw in the millennium around the world last New Year's Eve, and even if it was by mistake, we're not doing it again. That, at any rate, is my prediction ...

Year that almost wasn't

THIS is the last column of the year. My last column ever was supposed to have published back on Oct. 29, 1999, the day before the Star-Bulletin was to be put to bed, nay, to sleep, for the last time. But thanks to the court for giving us a chance to live, and the public, notably the Save-Our-Star-Bulletin folks, we survived long enough for a new suitor, David Black, to claim our hand. So while this is the final column of the year 2000, with any luck there'll be lots more in the next decade. And when the paper totally changes hands on March 15, there'll be two days to alert people as to the annual St. Patrick's Day festivities Saturday, March 17. And when we strike up the band, the boys (and girls) currently across the hall should soon be green with envy ... So have a great New Year's celebration, be mindful of fireworks, enjoy the football on TV and we'll return Jan. 2, 2001 ...
