St. Louis tourney
starts tomorrow

The annual Walter Wong Tournament tips off tomorrow at St. Louis' McCabe Gym, with a field of eight teams. Mainland teams include Thousand Oaks and South High from California, Roosevelt and East Lake from Washington, Robert Service from Arkansas and Graves from Kentucky. St. Louis' Division I and II teams are also competing in the tournament.

South and Graves are making their first trips ever to Hawaii. Graves has won five regional titles in the past eight years. Robert Service is favored to win the Arkansas state title and East Lake is undefeated and ranked eighth in the state of Washington. East Lake and Roosevelt -- also known as the Rough Riders -- are in the same league, and when they played last week, East Lake won.

Games begin tomorrow, Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and children under 6 get in free.

On Friday, the Doubletree Alana Hotel is sponsoring a Holiday Cookie Giveaway, with the first 200 fans in the door for the 6 p.m. semifinal game receiving a large cookie. Quality Travel, Inc. is sponsoring a shooting contest during halftime of the championship game, and the winner receives a trip for two to the Hula Bowl on Maui.

Visitors with Aloha

During last week's Iolani Classic, St. Joseph (Alameda, Calif.) took time out from their trip to give a free basketball clinic in Kalihi.

Wrestling

The Moanalua girls and St. Louis boys won the Moanalua Scholarship Invitational this past weekend. Cathy Migita (121 pounds) of Castle and Anna Tong (140) of Kaiser shared the girls' MVP. St. Louis' Travis Lee (119) captured the boys' honor. The Castle girls, which beat Moanalua in a meet last week, finished a close second in this tournament. Migita was ranked in the top ten in the nation in a wrestlingusa.com preseason poll and Lee was ranked in the top 15.
