Joyful over
Golden date

HERE'S one of those times when "Joy to the World" doesn'tMug shot apply to a Christmas song. It's the unleashing of government lobbiest Joy Gold on her world of friends on the occasion of her 50th birthday. And what could bring more Joy to the birthday girl than celebrating her Gold-en anniversary. The naminally subdued Gold is marking her half-century milestone in grand style with a masquerade extravaganza at Casablanca restaurant in Kaneohe on Friday. And what costume might we expect to find our birthday celebrant wearing? Let's just say that Glenn Close may have some Close competition in the role of Cruella Deville should Disney round up "103 Dalmations." ... Which brings us to the clever holiday card from the Humane Society. It shows Santa and his sleigh being pulled by dogs, cats, a pig, a bunny and a bird. The message: "With friends like these, Who needs Rudolph?" ...

ACRONYMICAL acrobatics from the Cisco kid: Cliff Cisco, spokesman for the Hawaii Medical Services Organization (HMSA), was asked what he wanted Santa to bring the new health plan for Christmas. "St. Nick arrived early," said Cisco, "and brought us a new VPMDPPO." Translated from officialese, that's a Vice President and Medical Director for the Preferred Provider Organization. Dr. William Osheroff arrived from the harsh New York winter last week wearing an aloha shirt and a very big smile. Looks like his Christmas wish came true as well ...

Pearl of the Pacific

SOMETIMES it pays to put off your Christmas shopping until nearly the last minute, or at least the last weekend. For example, those who've already done their shopping might be reluctant to return to the fray. But those who sign up this week at Maui Divers at Keeaumoku and King and fill out an entry form may win a black Tahitian pearl necklace to be given away Friday. It's valued at $2,500, so it might be worthwhile to stop by and fill out an entry form. And it isn't every day you get a chance to present a special someone with a $2,500 gift that costs you nothing ...

THE title of Emme Tomimbang's Christmas special, airing tomorrow on KGMB, is "Christmas Island Moment at Home with Emme and Friends." Lots of Isle musicians and chef Philippe Padovani preparing a lavish spread are featured. It should be noted, however, that it has nothing to do with Christmas Island, and the scene of the special isn't actually Emme's home -- it's "Graystones" in Makiki, a home on the Historic Hawaii Register ... Emme says she's still recovering from my recounting of our first date at her recent 50th birthday party. Fortunately, she says, "No one could tell if you were telling the truth" ...

Memory of Waldo

OLD friend Warren Johnston died four years ago this week, just before Christmas of 1996. I've many fine memories of Waldo, as we all called the whiskey salesman, but none topped the Christmas story. Each year, Waldo and wife Pat would throw a Christmas party at their Diamond Head home. On one occasion years ago, one of the cleaning people dusted off the four Angels, each holding a letter that together spelled "NOEL." The cleaning woman was confused, however, and when the Johnstons got home, the angels spelled out "LEON." And forever they stayed that way each Christmas, giving the opportunity for a story for new guests ...
