Bush will treat isles
well, gov says

President-elect George W. Bush will be a fair president, according to Gov. Ben Cayetano, who has worked with the Republican Texas governor in the past.

"I'm very confident he'll deal fairly with Hawaii," Cayetano said. "I told him I'm going to do my best to try and beat him, but if he gets elected, we can work together."

He said if the native Hawaiian recognition bill gets new life next year and passes Congress, Hawaii leaders should lobby Bush to sign it -- he may surprise people.

"I think he will look at it with an open mind," Cayetano said. "One thing I found when I shared some time with him at a conference in San Antonio a couple years ago is that he works well with Democrats. He has tremendous support with the Democrat legislature in Texas.

"I assume he will be working well with us as well."

ISLAND CHRISTMAS DECOR:

Where can you find rubber slippers, beach mats and bento boxes on top of the Christmas tree instead of beneath?

Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono is opening her office to the public to display her decorations, including two trees by artist Greig E. Gaspar, who has volunteered each year since 1996.

Silk orchids, rubber slippers, and takeout food containers adorn the tree in the reception area. The 10-foot douglas fir pine was donated by Continental Airlines. The second tree has a beach theme, with fish, bubbles and buckets.

Hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of the state Capitol. The office will be closed on Christmas Day.

LEGISLATIVE VOLUNTEERS:

Newly elected members of the state Legislature will dish out the goods as they serve lunch at Institute for Human Services shelters today and tomorrow. Participating are state Reps. Willie Espero, Michael Magaoay, Guy Ontai and Blake Oshiro, as well as state Sens. Fred Hemmings and Bob Hogue.

The event, organized by House Health Committee chairman Dennis Arakaki, will help the freshmen lawmakers learn more about homelessness. They will serve lunch at the Kaahi Street women's shelter today and the Sumner Street men's shelter Tuesday.

KAPOLEI LIBRARY:

The groundbreaking for the new Kapolei library is a proud moment for residents of Kapolei and surrounding communities, said Rep. Mark Moses (R, Kapolei), one of several state officials on hand for the ceremony.

"Following years of planning and a continuous uphill battle for funding, we are truly blessed to see the beginning of building our library which will provide knowledge and support for decades to come," Moses said in a statement.

The library will be the 51st branch and the second largest in the Hawaii State Library System.
