Anniversary
observances

CELEBRATIONS: Today marks the conclusionMug shot of 32 years of writing this column five days a week. On Monday, we'll begin Year No. 33, hopefully with more to come ... Meanwhile, the Sheraton Moana Surfrider is marking its 100th anniversary next year by showing "Hawaii in the Movies." It'll consist of two movies per month, such as "Waikiki Wedding" and "Blue Hawaii," from the collection of film historian Steven Fredrick of Hawaii Pacific University. The film showings begin in March, with the money collected going to Shriner's Hospital ... Though most of us marked the millennium when 1999 moved into 2000, the folks at the Queen Kapiolani are holdouts, and they're having their 2001 "Millennium Bash" on Dec. 31 of this year. Called "A Night to Remember," it'll feature nonstop entertainment with Augie T. ... They're avoiding the word "millennium," but Jared Grugett and Lance Padden are holding a "XXI Century Cruise" on a privately chartered yacht, taking off from Pier 2 across from Restaurant Row on New Year's Eve. They're calling it, "Cruise into the New Century," and the cost is $25. Call 864-1913 for info ...

ONE young man who's extremely happy that the election has been settled and particularly pleased that the vote counting in Florida is over is a bus boy at Ruth's Chris Steak House named Chad Tanabe. He has dimples, of course, but was reluctant to utilize zinger comebacks to those who asked if he were Dimpled Chad ... Lunching at Duc's Bistro and celebrating the success of their new venture, Rhino Event Marketing, were such canoe paddling and volleyball enthusiasts as Walter Guild, Marc Haine, Brant Ackerman and PR exec Glenna Wong ...

HAWAII'S "Jewish Santa Claus," Seymour Kazimirski, once again took his elves to Kapiolani Children's Hospital and visited 50 kids. Gifts were donated by parents of his daughter's Girl Scout troop and several companies in Hawaii. If you've never encountered him as Santa, you may recall Seymour from when he operated the old New York Deli ...

Mixed nuts

YOU can't tell the players without a program: Stu Chafetz of the Maui Symphony has invited Hawaii Public Radio's Michael Titterton to narrate his orchestra's "Nutcracker" Monday at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. It'll be Chafetz's second "Nutcracker" in two days, since he's narrating the benefit which piano teacher Ernie Chang is putting on at Orvis Auditorium on Sunday. Titterton was a natural choice for Chafetz, since he's already narrated Chang's "Nutcracker." And the Maui version will be a feast for the eyes as well as the ears, featuring as it does eight soloists from Ballet Hawaii's "Nutcracker." And if you want to see Ballet Hawaii's own version, they'll dance their way into your hearts Dec. 22 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall with stars of the American Ballet Theatre. Get those programs, quickly ...

Hapuna strikers

THEY'RE pretty proud of their golf pros at Hapuna, and with good reason. Three Hapuna pros demonstrated their skill at Hualalai the other day when Hapuna's Ron Castillo Jr. and Kevin Carll won the 2000 Head Pro and Assistant Pro championship. They finished with best ball scores of 67/65. Meanwhile, Hapuna's first assistant golf pro, Matt Hall, seized a coveted slot in the Aloha Section, qualifying him for the 2001 Sony Open at Waialae. He shot a 67. Kapalua's Doug Bohn won the Section's second spot with a 70 ...
