Star-Bulletin staff

The Western Athletic Conference yesterday named Hawaii forward Kylie Galloway women's basketball player of the week.

The 6-foot senior scored 45 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in two games, as Hawaii (6-2) captured the Hawaii Invitational title last weekend. Galloway was named MVP of the tournament.

Galloway, who leads the WAC in scoring with 18.4 points a game and ranks second in field goal percentage at .535, beat out Kate Beckler of Rice, Angie Heer of Nevada, Atari Parker of San Jose State and Christina Mata of UTEP.

Latin Hawaii trips Lanikai

Latin Hawaii prevented Lanikai Tuesday from sweeping the three Men's Island Soccer Organization season championships Sunday, winning 2-1 in a Fall semifinal at Waipio Soccer Park.

Lanikai held a 1-0 halftime lead with Philip Arthur's 27th-minute goal, but Elie Sauma scored and contributed an assist to give Latin Hawaii the win.

Lanikai, which finished first in its group with a 12-0-1 regular season record, had captured the Spring and Summer season titles earlier this year.

In the other semifinal, Jose Jube scored three times as Amazon defeated Group B regular season champion Dawgs, 5-1.

Amazon will face Latin Hawaii on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the MISO Fall championship at Waipio. Lanikai and Dawgs will play for third place at 1 p.m.

Oahu Bowl last game for Virginia coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - George Welsh, who turned Virginia from losers to contenders in 19 years as its football coach, retired after a frustrating season.

Welsh, 67, said he will coach the Cavaliers (6-5) in the Oahu Bowl on Dec. 24 against Georgia, then turn over the program he built to a new coach.

When Welsh arrived at Virginia in 1982, the Cavaliers had a 33-121-11 record in the ACC and had never been to a bowl. Since his arrival, they are 85-51-3 and will be making their 12th bowl appearance this month. His career record is 189-131-4.
