Flu, pneumonia shots
available statewide

Star-Bulletin staff

A number of flu and pneumonia shot clinics are scheduled this week at various locations on Oahu, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and the Big Island. Clinics on Kauai will soon be confirmed.

The state Health Department's Hawaii Immunization Program recommends that everyone at high risk for influenza should go to one of the following clinics or see their doctor.

Persons at risk for flu or persons who care for or live with such individuals will be given first priority. Persons at high risk for flu also are at high risk for pneumonia. Such persons need both shots. The pneumonia shot is usually a one-time-only shot. Ask your doctor.

Those at risk include:

Bullet Seniors 65 or older

Bullet Women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy

Bullet Anyone with chronic heart and lung diseases such as asthma or diabetes, kidney disease or a weakened immune system.

When family members or caregivers of those at risk take the flu shot, they are protecting those who are most at risk, says the Health Department.
