Travelers get
a head start with
besttoilets.com

When you're on the go and gotta go, a good public restroom becomes the world's most valuable piece of real estate. But where is it?

A webmaster with a passion for potties, David Vought offers an online guide to the best bathrooms in 12 cities. He's been doing this for three years and is drawing 1,500 hits a day.

Go to http://www.besttoilets.com for ratings of restrooms in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto and Washington, D.C.

All facilities recommended must be accessible to the public -- not locked or barred by a "Patrons Only" sign, which makes besttoilets.com a good pre-vacation stop.

In Hollywood, for example, it's helpful to know that the facilities at Buca Di Beppo, a restaurant on Universal Center Drive, is highly recommended. "It has lots of old Italian pictures of male genitalia and is quite humorous."

Besttoilets.com recently became portable, accessible via handheld computers and cell phones.

Here at the Star-Bulletin we issued our own guide to the best restrooms in Oahu's shopping centers last month. (See: Lux Lua, Nov. 28).

The guide focused on restrooms that are family friendly, and picked out Neiman Marcus in Ala Moana as the best equipped.

We have since been alerted that our evaluation of the Waikele Premium Outlets (which was not positive) overlooked that location's prime potty, near OshKosh B'Gosh.

So for the record: This restroom is clean with lots of stalls. It lacks that basic family amenity, a diaper-changing station, but it does have a large hassock, which would probably serve in a pinch.

The best thing about this bathroom is it adjoins a lounge with table, chairs, soda machines and two massage chairs. Pay two bucks for 4 minutes of shiatsu, a stress reliever after a day of shopping.
