Travel term
gives pause to Bush
campaign aide

Rep. Barbara Marumoto, chair of the Hawaii campaign for Gov. George W. Bush's campaign, was in Paris on vacation when the word came Friday that the Florida State Supreme Court had ruled in favor of Vice President Al Gore's appeal.

Within minutes of the news being flashed on CNN television, Marumoto was emailing her response back to Honolulu.

But when reporters asked her aide where the representative was, the press secretary, who asked not to be named, said:

"She's abroad. I mean, she's still a lady, but she's abroad."

IN A SLING:

The sling that state schools Superintendent Paul LeMahieu has been sporting wasn't due to a broken arm.

LeMahieu underwent treatment for a staph infection on the middle finger of his right hand.

He said the treatment included removing his fingernail and fingertip.

With his finger bandaged and his right arm in a sling to keep his hand elevated, LeMahieu attended Tuesday's induction ceremony for newly elected Board of Education members.
