Harold Ching, veteran Hawaii newsman and Star-Bulletin Kauai correspondent from 1966 until his 1975 retirement, died Sunday in Queen's Medical Center. He was 90.

Ching's career included work on the newspaper Garden Island on Kauai in years 1953-65, including service as news editor, and time as executive secretary of the Kauai County Charter Commission in 1965-66.

"He loved his work," recalled Ray Maneki, now retired and an assistant Star-Bulletin city editor while Ching was Kauai correspondent. "I got the impression he was more interested in bringing us the Garden Island (Kauai) than in retiring or making money. He was devoted to journalism."

Ching was born in Hanapepe, Kauai. He attended McKinley High School and the University of Hawaii. His career included editorship of the Hawaii Chinese News in 1931. He edited the Hawaii Daily Press in Hilo from 1932 to 1946 and the Kauai News in Lihue from 1950 to 1953.

His served as director of the Kauai unit of the American Cancer Society and in other civic activities. His most recent home was in Hanamaulu, Kauai.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; brother, Dr. Edward T. Ching of California; sister, Constance C. Chu of Kapaa, Kauai; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa. Call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual or aloha attire.
