Honors

Bullet Norman Chock, Waianae High School social studies teacher, was honored as the State History Day Teacher of the Year at the National History Day held at the University of Maryland.

Bullet Dr. Michael Pavkovic, associate dean of Arts and Sciences and coordinator for military studies at Hawaii Pacific University, was awarded a fellowship to participate in the 2000 United States Military Academy Summer Seminar in Military History that was held in West Point, N.Y.

Bullet Judy Sobin, executive director of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, formerly Hawaii Lawyers Care, was named Pro Bono Manager of the Year at the American Bar Association's Equal Justice Conference.

Bullet Students in Free Enterprise named Brigham Young University-Hawaii professor Denise Woodbury the "Champion of SIFE."

The BYU-Hawaii SIFE team also won the Success 2000 special competition at the International Exposition held in Kansas City, Mo., and was first runner-up for the semifinal league.

Bullet Congresswoman Patsy Mink and Dr. Sylvia Earle received "Making a Difference for Women" awards from Soroptimist International.

Bullet Housing and Urban Development awarded the state of Hawaii 18 of its Best Practices Awards for projects that other communities around the country can use as models to follow. The 18 projects competed with more than 2,900 nominees across the country. The projects were: Alternative Structures International dba Ohana Ola O Kahumana, Makawao Highlands, Hale Makana o Waiale, Molokai Community Service Council, Waimanalo Homes Homeownership Opportunity, Ellis Island of the Pacific: Fair Housing Infomercial Outreach, Kaho'okamamalu, The Community Connection, Housing Support Legal Project of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, Retail Training Program, Community Reinvestment Program, Lanakila Learning Center, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Senior Apartments at the Lihue Theater, Preservation of Section 8 Projects Collaboration, Homebuyer Education for Native Hawaiians (Hawaii CRA Forum), Hawaii Drug Court/Weed and Seed Enhancement Project, County of Kauai Home-Buyer Loan Program and Maili II Modernization Project.
