McKinley athletes
selling Christmas trees

McKinley High School's athletic department is sponsoring its annual Christmas Tree Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Miles Carey cafeteria.

Sheared Douglas fir trees from 6 to 7 feet in height will be available for $47. Tree trunks can be trimmed for another $2.

State budget cuts have severely hurt McKinley's athletic department. The department says the kokua of alumni and the community is needed and appreciated so it can pay for equipment, supplies and transportation for the teams.

Parking is available near the cafeteria at McKinley High School. Assistance will be available to load trees for those who can't do it themselves.

For ticket sales or more information, contact McKinley's Athletic Director Neal Takamori at 595-0418 or Gail Sykes at 594-0443.

NW isles lobster fishing banned until 2002

Commercial lobster fishing will be prohibited at Necker, Maro and Gardner Banks in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands through 2001 and at all other banks through 2002.

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council agreed yesterday to the closings, recommended by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The service closed the fishery for the 2000 season to protect the resource because of increasing uncertainty about the size of the stock and productivity. The agency said the stocks aren't overfished, but the closures are intended to prevent that from occurring.

The council will look into fisheries disaster relief to reduce economic and social hardships to fishermen because of the closures.

The council also approved a weighted point system to determine eligibility of a commercial bottomfish vessel to enter the Mau Zone -- waters surrounding Necker and Niihau Islands -- if the number of vessels fishing there fall below a 10-vessel limit.
