Lydee Ritchee
Gill McBarnet will be at the Maui Ocean Center
Saturday to sign copies of her children's book
"Tikki Turtle's Quest."

Tikki Turtle teaches
tots respect for
ocean life

Bullet "Tikki Turtle's Quest," by Gill McBarnet, (Runwanga Trading), 34 pages, hardcover, $8.95

Gill (pronounced Jill) McBarnet's 11th children's book gently presents educational material about sea creatures and how they bear and nurture their young.

The story follows a green sea turtle named Tikki who is unsure about the best place to lay her clutch of eggs. So she talks with whales, dolphins, eagle rays, seahorses and other ocean dwellers.

But their places and methods aren't for her, so she swims on from deep ocean to shore, saying, "Good for you, but not for me. So I'll continue to search the sea."

McBarnet's soothing language complements the muted tones and colors of her illustrations. The marine life is depicted realistically enough for educational purposes but with a delicacy that pleases the eye. Many are detailed enough to keep a child attentive.

Maui keiki will be treated to McBarnet's storytelling in the underwater acrylic tunnel at the Maui Ocean Center at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The Ocean Center is at Maalaea Harbor Village and adults pay an $18 admission. There is a fee of $12.50 for children ages 3 to 12 and free admission for under 3. Call (808) 270-7000.

If the cost is to steep, head to Waldenbooks Kaahumanu Mall, where McBarnet will give a reading at 2 p.m.
