Opponents to
join forces

Some St. Louis and Kahuku football stars will take the field Dec. 8 at Aloha Stadium -- playing on the same team. Eleven players from the teams that meet Friday for the state championship are scheduled to play on the East team in the annual East vs. West game.

PALAMA HOOPS: An international field of basketball teams gather Dec. 15-21 for the seventh annual Palama Settlement Boys' Tournament. The field includes three teams from California, four from Canada and nine local teams. Twelve girls' teams, including nine from Canada, compete in a tournament Dec. 16-18.

GOT MILK: The Milk Mustache campaign will award 25 high school seniors from around the country $7,500 scholarships and the chance to appear in a milk mustache ad. The winners, chosen from geographical regions, will be selected based on academics, athletics, leadership skills and community service. All seniors who participated in a sport during the 2000-01 school year can be nominated for the award. Coaches, teachers and students can submit nominations. Application and contest rules can be found on www.whymilk.com. Entry deadline is March 16, 2001. Finalists will be named in June.

SPARTANS DROP SOFTBALL: Maryknoll has withdrawn from the varsity division of girls' softball. ILH varsity teams play twice a week during the regular season.

KAHUKU FOOTBALL

In his first start of the year in the state semifinals against Kaimuki, he threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, all in the first half. He ran for 32 yards and passed for 128 more.

Nicole Garbin

BALDWIN SOCCER

Was named the MVP of the Moanalua Girls' Classic. She scored five of the team's eight goals in the four tournament games, including the lone goal in the title game win over Kamehameha.

Here are some of last week's other outstanding performers in Hawaii high school sports:

FOOTBALL

Bullet Bryson Au, Kahuku: Returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown to give the Red Raiders a 28-0 second-quarter lead.

Bullet Frank Butcher, St. Louis: Set the tone for the Crusaders' defense by intercepting a pass on the opening drive in rout of Waianae.

Bullet Jordan Caires, Kaimuki: Threw two scoring passes to Justin Faimealelei and rushed for a touchdown in the loss to Kahuku.

Bullet Bobby George, St. Louis: Completed five passes -- and four of them went for touchdowns.

Bullet Kelika Higa, St. Louis: Alternated at quarterback with George, going 9-for-17 for 199 yards and a long TD pass.

Bullet Daniel Inferrera, St. Louis: Set a tournament record by catching a 92-yard touchdown pass from Higa; finished with 110 receiving yards.

Bullet Marcus Salanoa, Kahuku: Rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns on just two carries in win over Kaimuki.

SOCCER

Bullet Kelly Higa, Roosevelt: The sweeper scored a goal in the Roosevelt Tournament and played great defense to help the Rough Riders get to the title game.

Bullet Momi Lopes, Waianae: The midfielder played outstanding defense in the Roosevelt Tournament.

SOFTBALL

Bullet Leo Sing Chow, Kamehameha: The junior southpaw dominated Sacred Hearts in the Waimea Tournament, helping Warriors to 10-0 win and 6-0 record in the tournament.



THAT'S A BIG PYRAMID

Bullet St. Louis' cheerleaders outnumbered Kaimuki's football players, 35-31, last Friday at Aloha Stadium during the semifinals of the 2000 Chevron State Football Championships.

ONE YEAR AGO THIS WEEK

Bullet An Aloha Stadium crowd of 10,864 saw St. Louis beat Kahuku, 19-0, in Hawaii's first-ever state championship football game.

The Crusaders won despite losing five fumbles.

St. Louis quarterback Timmy Chang threw three touchdown passes, leaving him one shy of the national high school season record of 65. Two of the TD passes were to Gerald Welch.

St. Louis running back Pesefea Fiaseu rushed for 156 yards on 20 carries and was selected the game's Most Valuable Player.

The Red Raiders had an 86-yard punt return for a touchdown by Aaron Francisco called back by a penalty.

Kahuku quarterback Vai Funaki was relieved by his sophomore brother, Inoke, after Vai suffered a thigh injury.

St. Louis' defense held Kahuku to 126 yards.
