Portlock gate
reopened

Question: What ever happened to the locked gate at Portlock that someone was locking to restrict beach access? Has it ever been reopened?

Answer: Yes, it's open and has been since the latter part of June. Although related controversy continues, the gate remains open and beach-goers use the lane there to get to the beach.

Property owner Bert Dohmen-Ramirez says people going to the beach use that lane near his home and two other lanes within 100 feet of it on either side for beach access.

"A vandal put a lock on the gate (earlier this year)," he said.

Dohmen-Ramirez has filed a lawsuit against City Council Chairman Jon Yoshimura, accusing the councilman of various abuses in the controversy.

"It's a matter that's going to be resolved in court," Yoshimura said in response. "My sole concern is with ensuring beach access at that site."

The city is trying to condemn the land involved for permanent beach access to settle the matter, Yoshimura said. "We're in court, and we're trying to get a trial date scheduled."

Yoshimura went out to check on the lock in June and found it was gone. Access to the beach has been unrestricted at the site since then.
